Question about Toshiba Satellite A205-S4777 Notebook

1 Answer

My Toshiba A205 S4777 won't start up and I can't use the recovery media to fix it.

When I switch on my laptop it prompts me for my BIOS password as usual. However, after I swipe my finger, the laptop shows the windows bar at the bottom of the screen for a few seconds and then goes to a black screen where it just stays. I've tried using the recovery media but my laptop just says "windows is loading files" and then repeats the same start up process as before (without prompting for the Bios password this time).
i've tried starting in safe mode and the system hangs after loading the crcdisk.sys file. Please help!!

I'h having the same problem...the system runs safe mode but hangs up at the crcdisk.sys file. After awhile I get a blank screen. I don't want to lose what we have on the hard drive. The F2, F8, and F12 screen come up. Last good configuration produces the same result as safe mode. Any help would be appreciated.

My battery charges but only lasts about 20 minutes once it says it is fully charged. Just purchsed a new battery thinking it was old (laptop is about 3 years old) and the same thing happens.

From what you describe and assuming the new battery was "new", I'd say you have an internal short which is draining the battery over a short period of time. I'd also investigate the accuracy of the battery charge indicator. Download this free utility which will give you a more accurate picture of your battery:
http://www.mioplanet.com/products/batterymeter/

I'm assuming you gave the battery a "commissioning charge" when you bought and used it?
If not, this is something you should do with all new LI batteries. This bit is reproduced from a website that sells batteries for the Toshiba satellite series:

"2. The new Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery pack needs to be circled (fully discharged and recharged) three to five times to reach its optimum performance.
3. Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery will undergo self-discharging when left unused for a long period of time. Thus, it should always be stored in a fully charged state and kept in a cool, dry and clean place.
4. It is normal if the new Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery gets warm when being charged or used. However, please pay special attention if the battery pack becomes excessively hot. This may indicate there is a problem with the charging circuit of the electronic device. Please consult a qualified technician if necessary.
5. To maintain the optimum performance of Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery pack, it is highly recommended to circle (fully discharging and recharging) it at least once a month.
6. New batteries are hard to be charged. Sometimes, your electronic device may indicate a fully charged condition about 10 to 15 minutes when Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery pack is being charged for the first time. When this happens, remove the battery pack and let it cool down for about 10 to 15 minutes then repeat the charging procedure. Sometimes, the new Satellite a205-s4777 battery will suddenly refuse to be charged. If this happens, a suggested solution is trying to remove the battery from the device and insert it again. "

Had a problem with Toshiba Satellite A205-S5800. Could not remember password, or the laptop created a new password after 3 tries at trying to remember. Ran recovery disc, and now the HDD password box...

Power the laptop off. Unplug it. Remove the battery. Turn it over. Open the bottom panels. Look for a small battery. Unplug this battery. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. RE-Assemble everything. Turn it back on - hopefully it has cleared the settings and you will be prompted to enter the BIOS.

Can't boot up

Hi!

You must have got a recovery disk with your laptop, insert that disk and it will solve your issue. If you are unable to find the disk or if that disk doesn't help then you will need to re-install the windows on your Toshiba notebook.

Please ask for any clarifications.

Do rate this solution as Fixya if found useful.

Try flashing the bios by pulling the chord out attached to the "watch" battery.

Issue

The computer models listed above may display a "Password =" prompt when the computer is turned on, even though no power-on password has been set. If this happens, there is no password that will satisfy the password request. If the computer is turned off and back on again, it is very likely that the same password prompt will appear. The computer will be unusable until this problem is fixed.

If the problem has not happened yet, you can prevent it from happening in the future by upgrading the BIOS to the newest version.

The occurrence of this problem on any particular computer is unpredictable -- it may never happen, but it could happen any time that the computer is turned on. If this problem does occur, it will be necessary to send the computer to a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider, who will fix the problem at no charge to you.

Resolution

If this problem has not yet occurred on your computer, then click the following link to download and install BIOS version 1.40. This BIOS displays a power-on password prompt only when a power-on password has actually been set via the BIOS Setup program.

You may also browse for a newer version of the computer's BIOS at pcsupport.toshiba.com.

For more help, see Support Bulletin 98081213 Obtaining downloads and support docs from the Toshiba Support website.

If the problem has already occurred on your computer, then please make arrangements with a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider to have this problem fixed at no charge. To locate a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider (ASP), please visit Toshiba's Global ASP Locator at http://pcrepair.toshiba.com

BTW, I've heard that this only happens when you boot up on battery power.

Maybe you can confirm this...

Garry,

I haven't found a solution for the problem yet. I've been using another laptop and kind of ignored the it for a while. However, i was recently told that i should change my hard drive. I'll try that and let you know if it works out. I'd also appreciate it if you could let me know about anything you hear regarding our problem.

My laptop won't start up and i can't use the recovery media to sort it out.

its sounds either your windows has been currepted or you have some missing driver/software wich cause re-start.
  • Try to boot in safe mode.
  • Start pressing F8 after making on your lap til the boot option menu appears.
  • Select Safe Mode and press enter.
  • If your lap boots well then, goto Start -> Run and type msconfig in the commad box and press enter key.
  • In System Configuration Utility click on Services tab and click Hide All Microsoft Services after that click on disable all. Then press Ok and reboot your lap normally. After do same as above and enable one by one service to get which cause problem.

If it even does not boot in safe mode, then i think you should re-install windows.

Thanks & good luck
Iqbal
