I upgraded the memory on my emachine W6409 to two sticks of 1GB DDR2 533MHz, according to the websites specs. But the computer boot up with both sticks, but work fine with one stick in either slot. Don't see any bios enable settings. Please help me figure this out!!
The memory is compatible because it works with either stick in either slot but not both in together! The emachine website says it's upgradeable to 2gb, so it shouldn't need one. I talked to the customer service but they just repeated the same things over and over from the manuel. They don't give you the option to download a bios until you pay to talk to an expert!!!The memory is compatible because it works with either stick in either slot but not both in together! I don't know your specific model, but some of the Emachines had some memory directly on the motherboard. With the 1Gb and 512Mb sticks installed, boot the machine and report how much memory the system sees. Perhaps the onboard memory is causing you to exceed the 2Gb limit.
Please post the memory size you get here with the above sticks.
1)Check for BIOS update from emachines. Older computer may need updated BIOS to handle the increased memory.
2) If it does start up but the computer crashes or it will not load windows, Verify the sticks are error free with a memory diagnostic program like memtest. If the sticks have errors, get them replaced.
If you have the additonal memory in the system correctly, it should be recognized. Attempt to boot the system with just the new stick in. If it boots you most likely have a motherboard issue. If it doesn't, it's just a bad stick of memory and I suggest just getting a new one.
Will it boot with only ONE of the 2GB memory-sticks installed?
Will it boot with ONE of the 2GB memory-sticks AND one of the 1GB memory-sticks?
Look closely at the 1GB memory-sticks.
Does the label show 'DDR266' or 'DDR333' or 'DDR400' or 'PC2100' or 'PC2700' or 'PC3200' ?
Do the 2GB memory-sticks have _identical_ information?
It's definitely _not_ acceptable to have "slower" RAM (smaller numbers) in the new RAM,
but it _might_ be acceptable to have "faster" RAM (larger numbers).
PC3200 is backwards compatible with PC2700. Meaning you can install PC3200 into your motherboard but it won't run any faster than would PC2700, however it will not cause any harm and should work fine.
Emachine's would say you need PC2700 most likely because they're trying to sell you some.
One of your new memory modules or the memory slots on your computer may be defective. I recommend installing a single stick of memory and booting your system. If it is successful then shut it down, disconnect the power and install another stick. Boot again and keep doing so and by process of elimination identify the bad memory stick or the bad memory slot.
This is the "likely" cause and isn't too uncommon.
Check speed settings in BIOS, make sure that the sticks are the correct voltage for your motherboard. If the specs are correct, try a program like memtest86. This will tell you where the problem is, but it is up to you to find which stick that location is :) Might take some trial and error before you find the defective one!
Read your manual, as there website does not offer it just driver downloads. Also, just because it is the same kind does not mean it will work. That is why most MFG of motherboards have a quality vendor list for memory. There are thousands of people who can't get some mfg's memory to work with there systems when the specs are the same. But I would go with what Ultim said and there might be a slot limit.
