The microwave described above functions for roughly 3 seconds, then shuts down. When using the reheat, or a different function, it operates for roughly 10 seconds, then shuts down.
I have reset it several times, and left it unplugged for several days. I have also thoroughly cleaned the interior compartment and exterior of the machine. So far, the problem remains the same.

Our microwave (same model) did the same thing. On the third time (on reheat), it ticked around for about 10 seconds, stopped, while smoke came from behind and underneath the microwave. Very scary. I quickly unplugged. Unfortunately, my receipt is not in the manual where it should be. I'm guessing ours was about 2 years old. I'm currently trying to see if there was a recall out.
My problem is exactly as Kikyn described. Unit manufacture date is April 2005. The magnetron is still within the 5 year warranty. I suspect it shuts off due to an expected voltage or current not being sensed. At less than $150.00 new, it may not be worth taking in. I'd be willing to look at it myself if I could determine what's wrong.
I have the same problem. What was the solution?
Ihave the same problem. When turned on it shuts down within 3 seconds, the reheat works about 12 seconds then it shuts down and you can smell
something that smells like wires burning.
Same shut off problem and smoke, a lot of it. sure did smell up the kitchen for the day. No more Panasonic for now. But I guess they are all made in China now.
