How do I remove the fabric softener cap from my Whirlpool top loader? It does not seem to screw off and I can't seem to pull it off either (like most machines I've used) Don't know the model....about 15 years old and it's a Clean Touch if that helps.

From fabric softener not dispensing or not draining to a blocked washing machine's detergent drawer or one filled with water, we take a look at the most ...
that's right just put your fingers under agitator and pull up,under the agitator is a coupler that has a screw in it,whirlpool has the nut in there,if you have a problem with the agitator not moving the clothes around that coupler wears out and has to be replaced.
Remove top cap and remove the screw holding it to the shaft of the gearcase. Some models have a fabric softener dispenser you can pull or twist off, then a cap, then possibly another cap with a seal that pulls off before gaining access to the screw. You will need extensions for a socket set.
Yes it is,although the whole peice running half way down will probably have to be purchased..It's called the(Clothes Mover)it has finns running down & can be removed by a bolt down the centre after removing the top cap.
I had the exact same problem. The problem is that your fabric softener dispenser is clogged up with a lot of dried, sticky fabric softener. The flooding comes from the part of the cycle when water that is to be flushed through the fabric softener dispenser can't drain properly so it spills into the bleach dispenser and onto the top and into the lid gasket as well.
To remove the dispenser for cleaning, you need to open the top of the washer. (First pull it away from the wall.) Carefully pry off the little emblem in the front center of the washer lid. Then remove the screw. Then slide the top forward to you about a 1/2 inch and prop it up carefully.
You then need to remove both hoses that are attached to the bleach and fabric softener dispenser (part of the same unit). Then unsnap the combined unit from the washer top. Then clean all the gunk out by running it under scalding hot water in the laundry tub and swirling the gunk out. Don't attampt to remove the blue round fabric dispenser part from the unit.
Put it all back together and you're good until you clog it up again with too much fabric softener; maybe several years again.
Pull off the softener cup
Remove the cap underneath
Remove the bolt
Pull up on the agitator to remove....if it is stuck, drizzle some liquid wrench into the bolt area
This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action
Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.
If you have a 2 part agitator assembly (Fabric softener dispenser, top agitator and main agitator)
First, push down on the ring around the bottom of the fabric softener dispenser and lift it off the agitator.
Pry the top cap (a short screwdriver into the slots in the cap works) of the top agitator.
Looking into the center of the top agitator, you'll see a plastic piece with a 1/2" square hole. Using a 1/2" socket set extension, unscrew the piece carefully. You might have to hold the bottom agitator in place while you do this.
The top agitator pulls up.
You'll see a bolt and screw holding the bottom agitator on. Carefully unbolt this one and the entire bottom agitator will pull up.
MOST DON COME APPART SOME HAVE A BLUE RING PUT IT UP AND PULL THE SOFTERNER UP AND PUT IN THE WASHER RUN A LOUD SMALL AND HOT WATER AND LET IT CLEAN IT SELF IN THE WAHSER
I just did it. All you do is pull up on the blue part -- put the fingers of both hands under the rim and pull. It isn't screwed or bolted on. If there's a lot of gunk built up, it's all the harder to pull up. Be prepared for some yucky stuff. It would be nice if that whole section would come out, since you have to clean the area below with Q-tips.
