You can download the drivers for your printer from this link;
Dell 1700 Laser Printer drivers for windows xp
Open the link, click the blue "Download" button, another new pop window will come up, again click the first "Download" button.
If you have in the F8 options, a Recovery Console select that and run at the command prompt:
chkdsk /r
That will look for and repair disk errors.
Otherwise, look for and select Restore my computer, from this F8 menu.
Failing that you will need a copy of Vista or XP but if you have a 64bit OS like Vista64 you will need a copy of that.
Let me know what happens. But, I won't be online for much longer so I'll send a message to a friend of mine in Ireland who can help you further since he's in a different time zone.
It sounds as if it's set to print in poster format,
1 From the computer’s software application, select File then Print.
2 Click Properties (or Options, Printer, or Setup, depending on the application) to view the
printer driver settings.
3 From the Page Layout tab, click More Page Layout Options.
Copy & paste Canon's URL I've provided here. They have the software available as a download. Click on the "Downloads" drop down menu you'll see near the top right. Select "Consumer" where you'll see 3 selection menus.1st select "printers", 2nd select "Pixma iP series" then select your printers' model number. Hit the Go button & that will take you to the page to select your computers' operating system.
1 tip. Determine where you want the software to be downloaded onto your computer prior to the actual download. Depending on what I plan to do with a download, I'll either send it the desktop or "my documents" folder. Specifying the location this way makes it much easier to find the file to start the installation process.
Once the OS is selected you'll see a red highlighted .exe link.Click on that & you'll have usual disclaimer statement & then save it to your computer.
