Keeping baking soda in the freezer has little chance of actually absorbing any odor causing air because the air is too dense. Two solutions I can recommend is to either turn the freezer to its HIGHEST setting so it doesn't freeze anything and try the baking soda again, or the second is very inconvenient, but I've seen it work, is to unplug the unit and place a container of Damp Rid in it for a couple of days.

Check the inside of the freezer and ensure there are no cracks in the lining as moisture can get in there and cause horrible smells, especially if you have ever put meat (especially poultry) and the package leaked before freezing.

My freezer leaks when not freezing

Drain tube
Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer. If this repeatedly happens with yours, you may can prevent it by taking a bare copper wire and wrap it around a fin near the heater and put the other end a few inches down the drain. The heat convection may prevent it from freezing.

Kenmore elite refrigerator model 106.50504990 ice trough in freezer freezing up. Could this be the fan in the freezer is not working?

If the other parts of the unit are not cold, you may check out the fan. But this can be caused by build up of dirt or clogging of the freezer drain, trapping water and eventually freezing. Isolating the fridge and freezing the entire freezer. It could also be the thermistor or the one that tells the part that serves as the thermostat may have frozen up and is not giving accurate reading. If the unit is old, this may be a sign that the freon level is incorrect.

The fridge part of my fridge freezer keeps freezing everything,

Hello

I have the same problem and have talked to the manufacturer. They said to turn off the appliance for 24 hours then it should be good as new when you switch it back on. Obviously you'll have to find somewhere for your freezer contents. I'm going to try this myself tonight.
