No voice

Go to Garmin's Web Updater webpage and download and install the program. Follow the directions to update the firmware and voices. TTS types are "Text To Speech" and will read and speak street names, like "Turn right to Elm Street, etc. Those that lack TTS are standard voices - they will only say "Turn right in 100 feet" in the same place on the road.

Go though the device menu settings and make sure that you have a voice selected "Jack US English" or "Jill US English" are the typical TTS voices chosen for US English speaking drivers.

Good luck!

Recently purchased 335.XL.LM from Sams Club. Used it the other day for 1st time, TomTom did not speak street names. spoke when to turn in 500 feet, etc put no names, made a lot of "U Turns", I am old and...

You have to select a computer generated voice - It has to say "whatever name comes with your GPS" followed by computer generated.<!-- from fixya rte -->

How to make it talk

For your GPS to speak, please select the sound files. Procedure explained below. Please note that although all GPS speak, only those that has an "S" in their Name (for example: ONEXL 340S) speak the street names. If there is no S at the end of their name, you can select any sound file for your GPS to speak. Not all sound files speak out the street names. If you would like to have the street names spoken, you need to select a voice that ends with computer. For example, the voice file selection: Simon, English UK, Computer will speak street names. But the voice file, Bonnie, English US, will not speak Street names. Dave, English US, computer will give you street names but Lori or Mandy, English US will not. Procedure to get the street names spoken: Tap on main screen. Tap on change preferences. Tap on arrow. Tap on change voices. Tap (select) a voice that ends with computer. Tap select. Tap done till you reach the main screen.

Does the garmin nuvi 255W speak street names

I had the same problem with my nuvi 255w. Called tech support at Garmin and they told me one of the voices under Tools, Settings, Language, Voice has to end in a persons name. I had British English selected and it did not speak street names. When I selected Austrailian Englich - Karen, the street names all work fine.

Help - my Garmin 260W no longer announces street names. How can I get this feature to reactivate????

All of the Garmin automotive GPS units that speak street names are also loaded with basic voice prompts (i.e. 'Turn Right in 500 feet') as well as 'text-to-speech' voices that speak street names. If one of the basic types of voice prompts has been selected, the voice prompts will not speak street names.
In order to change this setting, please follow these steps:
  1. Touch Tools (Wrench Icon) from the Main Menu
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Language*
  4. Touch on the blue rectangle that corresponds with Voice
  5. Touch on a voice that is labeled with (TTS) at the end. These voices will speak street names. Options without a name or the TTS label will say the distance until the next turn, but will not include the street name.
  6. Touch Ok
The voice has now been changed.

If this is not what you meant, please reply with further details. If you found the solution resolved your issue, kindly take a moment to award this a Fixya rating in appreciation of my efforts.

Thank you.

Gamin nuvi 260W - Cannot set to text-to-voice.

Garmin automotive GPS devices that have text-to-speech (speak street names) are also loaded with pre-recorded voices that do not speak street names (example: "Turn Right in 500 feet"). If one of these pre-recorded voices has been selected, the voice prompts will not speak street names.
To change the voice prompt to spoken street names:
  1. Touch Tools (Wrench icon) from the Main Menu
  2. Touch Settings*
  3. Select Language or Locale
  4. Touch the Voice language option
  5. Select a voice option that includes a person's name (ex. Emily) or TTS. Options without a name or the TTS label will say the distance until the next turn, but will not include the street name.
  6. Select OK
The device should now speak street names.
*Note: The Setting option is not required on all nuvi units.

Hope that helps! Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.

P.S. – I would greatly appreciate a FixYa! rating if the solution I provided fixed or helped you resolve your problem.

Thank you for using FIXYA!

Cheers!

Speaking the names of major streets

It will only tell you the names of the streets if you use the COMPUTER voice. The other voices will not announce street names. So go to your voice selection and pick the computer voice...either male or female.
