Contact Nikon USA (if you're in the US) and ship them the camera and attached lens. This will cost, which they will estimate up-front, but it is the absolutely best solution to the problem. Anything else is a hack job!

It sounds like you dropped it on the lense, and the little motor inside that moves it broke. If you still have a warrenty on the camera, exchange it at the place you got it or send it to the manufacturer.

The lens cover is not really needed, but you can replace it yourself if you can find that other part. If you can't find it, just remove the lens cover entirely and just be careful with your lens. Here's an example:

E18-lens stuck out-not fully out-won't budgein or out any further

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try. As you've dropped it, you might need to start with Fix #7:

Hi: First of all, with that behavior, your lens are stuck. Probably the problem was on the assembly. Try to disassemble and assemble them again. Regards
