Picture Stretch on Panasonic PT-53WX54

This is one of several models that had a common problem.

If set comes on with sound and you after a minute or two see a faint odd band of noise top to bottom on the screen to the right side C509 which is a .047 cap at 200 volts is bad.

Cap is seen in attached photo(location marked and cap here gone).

The cap when you locate it from the C509 number which is on top and bottom of board may have a crack or not---it is the cause of this problem.

There is a hard way and a easy way to get at it--let me know and I will explain.

There are several brown caps here and some plugs here are removed.

I would not try operation of the set in this condition too long.

Press the "Aspect" button on the remote until the picture looks appropriate. You are probably trying to display a 4:3 ratio channel on your 16:9 ratio TV. You are probably viewing it in "zoom" mode, which does not stretch the 4:3 ratio video, but enlarges it until it fits the width of the screen, which zooms part of the video off the top and bottom of the screen.

If you have sound---the faint band is towards the right of the middle of the screen I know which part is bad it is very common on these sets and about a 3 dollar part.

Hello jwade,

This looks like it could be a problem in the Convergence/Deflection section. If possible could you send me pictures of the actual problem. Because they will let me know if this is a convergence or a deflection issue. The problem is these two sections are dependent on each other, but follow certain troubleshooting methodologies. Again post or send me pictures of the actual screen, and from that I should be able to help you.

Circuit problems, -- consult pro/tech

The PT-53WX54 is a standard projection set and does not have a bulb. It has 3 separate picture tubes. If you have lost the picture completely, not even on-screen menu, then something has stopped working in your set. It could be a video processor, vertical deflection or possibly a convergence problem. The set should be serviced by a qualified tech familiar with the Panasonic projection sets.
