1998 Valkyrie/1500 stock. Owned since new. I run with high octane premium gas. The past two years my Honda has become more difficult to start. Cold weather stops it from starting at all. Took it to a dealer,spent $300.00, told I needed a choke cable. I repaired the cable, it started like new for a week and then back to the not wanting to start again. I'm getting spark.Looked at a couple of the plugs and they looked dry but I could smell gas after trying to start for 10 minutes. Lots of time and no money. Help !

SOURCE: 1998 honda shadow will not start

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a few possibilities you may want to check/explore:

  • stale gasoline;
  • clogged fuel filter (inside the tank above the fuel shutoff valve;
  • clogged, bocked, varnished, gummed carbs, jets, air pin holes;
  • stuffed air filter/box;
  • vacuum leak (rubber coupling, manifold side);
  • air leak (airbox base assembly seated/fitted on the carbs.
Basically, a general cleanup of the fuel lines, tank and the carbs. Sitting for some time tends to leave varnish like coating on most parts.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

SOURCE: cbr 125 choke problem

It sounds like the choke line may not have been routed correctly when the new one was installed. Remove the gas tank and check to see that the line is not being stretched anywhere along the way AND that the gas tank when re-installed is not stretching the line. The line may have been kinked when installed. Look at the mechanical movement of the choke at the carb. Does it operate freely? Remove the air filter and look inside the center of the carb, (you may need to use a small mirror for this), does it look like the choke is opening and closing properly when the choke is moved on and off?

SOURCE: 98 Honda Valkyrie Tourer, engine stalls

Check vacuum line from #6 intake runner (port side rear cylinder) to the fuel petcock valve. The valve is vacuum operated for safety. It cuts off fuel to the carbs when the engine is shutdown. Hose could be cracked or diaphram in valve is cracked. Easy to inspect the valve.

SOURCE: Valkyrie is difficult to start in cold weather

try using a lighter oil (5W-30, or 10W-30) if your not already using it.

1998 Honda F6 C Valkyrie gas leaking from bottom of fuel valve

This answer above was perfect and allowed me to fix my 1999 Valkyrie in about 30 minutes! And tapping the carb bowl did seem to free up the valve! Thank you! Copied and pasted from above: Been there done that, Carb needle stuck in the open position. Do NOT try to start it this way as if a cylinder fills with fuel it will hydrolock and cranking the engine can break expensive things. If you need to crank it pull the 3 spark plugs on the effected side and crank it over to remove the fuel from the flooded cylinders. This may require carb. removal and tear down if tapping on the carb bowls doesn't fix it. Same thing happened to my 1999 Valk. Interstate.

What octane level of gas should I use for a 2003 Honda Shadow ACE

Usually premium (92 octane). That's what the bikes are designed to run on. Sometimes you can get away with using 89 octane. But try your best to never use 87 octane fuel, unless you're stuck somewhere and that's all you have available to you.

I have a 1998 valkyrie and at idle speed and low speed the engine misses and the performance lacks being ideal. when accelerting and running at high speeds its great. plenty of power and performance is...

The Valkyrie is notorious for burning the vacuum lines on the inside of the intake manifolds. They burn, get brittle, and break from back firing up the manifold caused typically by an aftermarket exhaust system. Stock bikes burn the tubes more slowly. Check all six tubes and replace this will probably solve the problem.

Should I use Premium or Regular gas in My motorcycle? 1998 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classis.

i use 89, my cbr recommends 91 but i cant really feel a big difference but i do feel a slight power loss when using 86..but it does run fine!
Actually a higher compressive motor should use a lower octane.. it helps it start up easier , also using thinner oils like 5 or 10w will help for easier starting in colder climates. can i get a rating on this one..thanks!

Trouble starting below 70 degrees

Are you pushing down on the choke lever really hard? These things have a really tight choke lever. I choke mine and reduce the choke to maintain 1500 or so RPM until it is slightly warmed up. Then it runs fine. These are cold blooded machines.

Hope this helps.

Premium or regular gas

Fuel comes in different grades due to octane levels, the higher grade the higher octane, the higher price. If you have the owners manual or window sticker, you would see that the car was probably made to run on 87 octane (regular unleaded), I have been through the different octane levels for more than 30 years and I have decided that the cheapest runs as well as the most expensive. The higher octane will sometimes cause an engine to ping or rattle under acceleration, if this happens to yours go back to the cheap stuff and everything will be fine. That is my opinion, others may differ, but I run my BMW on the cheapest I can find and I still get 31 MPG hwy.
