Well for starters, your device is still under the manufacturer warranty, so I would consider tapping that resource.
Based on what I know of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) The telltale sign of a cracked screen is the blotchy display. Usually cost more to replace the display than to get a new unit.
A craked screen is not normally covered under a manufacturer warranty unless it was damaged under normal use. (hard to prove)
You may have been charged for the cost of an extended warranty by best buy (they usually ask) If so, that would cover theft and user induced damage. Take your receipt back to best buy and see what your options are.
