To print from your machine
1. If you are printing from battery power insure the batteries are good and installed correctly, or use the AC adaptor.
2. If using the AC adaptor insure that the adaptor is plugged into a working AC outlet, or use a good set of batteries installed correctly.
3. Insure the ribbon cassette is installed correctly
4. Insure that the ribbon cassette has not run out. If all the ribbon is on the left take up reel then replace the ribbon
If there are still no characters on the paper your machine may need to be serviced

The lift-off tape is to low

1. Use the SPACEBAR or BACKSPACE to move the carrier to the center of the typewriter, then turn off the typewriter and unplug the unit from the AC outlet.
2. Open the Top Cover and remove the cassette ribbon, if installed.
3. Pull off both spools by holding the correction tape taut between the spools; bring the correction tape to a position parallel with the platen and lift up and out.

4. Pass the new tape through left guide, behind the ribbon guide and out through the right guide. The rough (sticky) side of the tape should face the platen.

5. Attach the feeder spool to the pin on the left.

6. Attach the take up spool to the pin on the right. Turn the take up spool counter-clockwise until a small amount of white tape has wound around it.

7. Replace the cassette ribbon and close the top cover, plug in the AC cord to the AC outlet, and turn on the typewriter.

You do'nt say what make. Turn the machine off. Check the daisy wheel is in correctly, check the ribbon cassette is in correctly, and check the lift off tape is not tangled in the daisy wheel.

Brothers SX400 - cannot get ribbon threaded so key strikes it

If you bought the correct ribbon for a start, then you do not need to rewind it. It should come already wound round its pulleys, and should not fail due to slippage. there should be supports in the mechanism to keep the ribbon in place.

Assuming you have the correct ribbon (that is the fabric is in its right position), and the cassette casing design is correct, the cassette should sit squarely and correctly to enable your printhead to strike the ribbon when you press your keys.

So, the reason why the casing is sitting about 1/4 inch above the guide may well be because of a wrong casing design. Carefully compare the design of the ribbon cartridge that you have with that of an OEM. YOU MAY FIND a lug or protrusion. If this is the case, I suggest you get a new compatible ribbon cartridge with a good design from a reliable source. is one such source.

Typing wrong letters on Brother SX-4000

Try hitting [CODE] + [RESET] at the same time to reset the cartridge. Make sure the cassette is installed correctly.. the "ear" on the cassette should always be on the upper right.

Brother typewriter

make sure you power on the typewriter and space bar carrier until middle of bar. flip open cover and put ribbon in rear end first then push front to lock. i have to then turn orange knob on top of ribbon cassette in direction that arrow points just to tighten ribbon and that usually will lock the ribbon cartridge if it lock with first push. also, the ribbon itself goes in front of the 2 guides that stick up higher than the rest. hope this helps. if not you can look at brother website under that model and look at manual. it shows you how.

Not typing any letters

the printhammer/wheel may not be latched into place. there is a black lever on the right side of the printhammer. you pull it towards you to remove the printwheel and forward to latch it into place. otherwise the machine will probably need repair, or just go to a thrift shop and you can pick one up for $10 to $25 dollars. just plug it in and try before you buy.

1 - Is the dailsy whell properly installed ? (Has the lever been pressed firmnly ?) is the correct daisy wheel installed?
2 - Have you run out of ribbon ?
3 - Have you pressed the 'spider web' key with + // keys after replacing cassette ribbon, correction tape or daisy wheel?

I have the instruction manual if that helps..

Pleas feel free to advise your email, and I will gladly forward :
