I need a picture or a detailed drawing of mtd part# 917-0003 - Tine drive assembly. My tiller was taken apart by an inept repair place and returned to me in pieces - I think i'm missing the gear side of the assembly, the sprocket is still in place on the shaft. The repair place swears they gave me all of my parts - john buffalo ny

SOURCE: broken clutch cable connector, MTD Tiller

I found micro fiche on jackssmallengines.com . Click on the manufacturer's tab at the top of the page then you'll have the option to use an off-site tool to locate your machine. I used it and found my 1990 mtd rear tine tiller. I needed the cable that engages the tines - maybe the same as you. The part number for my 1990 model's cable was 746-0535. Dont know if it was still the same in 96 to 98. But look at the fiche and see.

SOURCE: MTD series 410 rear tine tiller drive wheels slip

I have the same issue with one I am working on. It appears the keys in the drive shaft are not rotating far enough out on the drive gear side to fully engage in the gear. I have studied and studied this and so far I have been unable to determine why. If I find out I will let you know. I am also trying to figure out what is supposed to pull these keys out of the till engagement gear.

SOURCE: I have a MTD yard machine rear tine tiller. Goes

You will have to get into the gearbox. It isn't too hard but is time consuming. Sounds like the drive for the tiller has broken. Could just be the chain in the gearbox for the tiller drive.

It is the shift fork in the transmission. Bad part design and if you plan to take it apart, use sandpaper and really clean the wheel axle and tine axle before you take it apart.

MTD Series 410 rear tine tiller. Tines won't engage.

I had the same problem. After splitting the case, I found that the shifting fork was bent and the pins that move the shift collar were worn. I made new pins for and reinforced the shifting fork, put it back together and if worked for a few minutes until it would jump out of gear while tilling. I would try to hold the external shifting rod down so that it would not jump out of gear but eventually it quit working completely. I tore it down again and the pins were already work out. I ordered a new detent ball and spring for less than $10 including shipping. This seems to have cured the problem. Apparently the detent spring was weak which allowed the shifting collar to disengage from the drive gear when under load. The original spring had been replaced with a new part number so it may have been made stronger. Tearing one apart is not easy but is certainly doable. To make it easier, put the nuts back on the bolts from where they came. Also get the parts manual picture to help with reassembly. Be careful with the case gasket. It costs a ton for a new one but since the grease is so thick, you could probably silicone it back together if you destroy the gasket.
