no, there's nothing wrong with either your graphics card & monitor.. it just that your graphics card does not support a 1680x1050 resolution. if you want to fully enjoy the resolution of your monitor, you should upgrade your graphics card. purchase at least 256mb graphics card and you will see the difference..

Mac's a bit differant than windows. To change your screen resolution first change the monitors refresh rate to something like 75 hertz. Than you can change the Screen resolution. Thats how it is done on a windows machine. Than again your Mac might need a video card software update.

You might want to consider a default settings reset. To refresh or reset the monitor back to default settings, unplug the
monitor's power cord, and then press the the power button for five (5)
seconds to drain any residual power. Plug in and then turn on the
monitor. The default settings load.

First shut down the pc and then plug in new monitor then boot up and see if windows 7 will auto find the monitor.
is this a single display or are you using 2 monitors, i had 2 monitors and used the other to change the display on mine when i had this problem i am also using windows 7 and reboot usually fixes display problems because it wont see old monitor any more and detect the new one.
also update any video drivers you have like nvidia or ati(catalyst controll center)
