When my computer wouldn't recognize my Pearl, these are the steps I followed after downloading the firmware upgrade from

start the program,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button when the term "initializing" replaces "searching",
click the start button to replace the firmware.
You might want to try leaving the "format data" box unchecked the first time. If that doesn't work and allow you to backup your music, bite the bullet and format the data area.
After I did this, my pearl started normally, and my computer recognized it again. It also fixed my aac-error problem.
