Purchase a wireless router that fits your needs and price range.
Follow the router's manual to set up the router and its Internet connection, which will probably require connecting a wired client to the router. Once the wireless router is set up, the wired connection is no longer necessary. However, it's best to leave the wired client connected if it's a separate computer from that on which you're going to set up WiFi. If something goes wrong, you can access the administration interface again.
Gather information from the setup process. In order to set up the wireless client, you will need to know the service set identifier (SSID), the Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key and the channel and mode.
Boot up the laptop and plug in the WiFi card. This will not be necessary if your laptop has an integrated WiFi card.
Install any drivers needed to use the WiFi card. Insert the disc that came with the WiFi card and follow the on-screen installation process. Most discs will trigger a new hardware wizard that makes installation extremely simple.
Double-click on the "WiFi Connection" icon. It can be found in the system tray at the bottom of the laptop screen.
Click on "Properties."
Select the "Wireless Networks" tab.
Use the "Add" button at the bottom of the dialog if your WiFi network isn't in the "Avable Networks" section.
Click on "Configure" when you see your network's SSID in the "Available Networks."
Enter your network's SSID and WEP key.
Click on "Start," then choose "Connect To" and "Wireless Network Connection." Your computer should now be able to access the WiFi network. If the WiFi network is connected to the Internet, it should also be able to connect to the Internet.

Hi. First things is you should have a wireless router there or you are at a certain hotspot where there is a free wireless internet access e.g Starbucks. Procedure below:

Decide on a Netgear router. There are a
number of router offerings, and prices and features differ depending on
the model. Choose one that meets your needs and fits your price range.
Step 2
Purchase a Netgear router, looking for the best price
possible. Consumer electronics shopping sites
like NewEgg and TigerDirect often offer good deals on clearance, open
boxes or shipping (see Resources below).
Step 3
Place the router by clearing a space on or under a desk. The
router should be located centrally to reduce the distance to clients and
assure better connections. The location will vary depending on how it
will be used. For example, it shouldn't be placed in the corner of a
basement if wireless clients all over the house will be using it.
Step 4
Set up and plug in the Netgear router and wait a few seconds
for it to boot up. Since the router is essentially a mini-computer, it
won't work instantly when it's turned on. While it's booting, the power
light should flash. When it's finished booting, the power light should
stay solid.
Step 5
Connect a computer to the router, either with a wireless or a
wired connection. Reboot the computer to ensure it gets a new IP
address from the router via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
Step 6
Open the web interface by entering "http://192.168.1.1/"
into the address bar of your web browser. If a login screen is
presented, use "admin" as the username and either "1234"
or "password" as the password.
Step 7
Connect to the Internet, if necessary. Plug your cable modem
or DSL modem into the router's WAN port in the back and run the Internet Connection
Setup Wizard from the web interface.
Step 8
Follow the directions and provide authentication information.
Step 9
Connect more clients. At this point, clients should be able
to connect and access the Internet.
Ok, my friend if you don't have internet services whether you use router or modem you won't be able to connect...
You can buy a netgear, buffalo or speed touch router they are quite good...
