Question about Amana ACO1840A Microwave Oven

Open Question

Mircowave blew My amana over the stove microwave (1999) starting arching the last couple of times we used it. Almost like there was foil in it. Then it stopped working altogether. The vent fan works, the light works, even the clock and timer work. My husband thinks it's a bad diode. Can you help?????

Thanks for writing back. I know it sounds confusing but the vent fan runs, the lights work, the clock and timer work. The microwave doesn't come on at all. It was very greasy when we took it down. My husband has checked all the thermostats and fuses. All of that is fine but he did find a blown diode. When the arching happened it came from that round silver disk in the top of the microwave. Could this need replaced? If so do you know where we could get one? Or the replacement diode? Thanks so much for your help.

The round silver disk is the stirrer. It may be run be a motor or by the cooling air flow.

If it jams, fails to rotate, or is greasy or has food stuck to it, it can arc. If this goes on long enough, it can damage the magnetron, too.

If it is clean and has no burn marks, it can be used again.

If you need a new one, you can probably order it here, where you can also find handy exploded view diagrams.

Can you reply back with your full Amana model number and the BOM/Manufacturing number? That way I can help you better.

    Here are examples:

    Model Number BOM/Manufacturing Number
    ACO1840AB PACO1840AB0
    ACO1840AB PACO1840AB1
    ACO1840AC PACO1840AC0
    ACO1840AC PACO1840AC1
    ACO1840AW PACO1840AW0

I'm confused... First you say it stopped working altogether, then you said the vent fan, light, clock and timer work.

Do you mean that it runs but doesn't heat?

Arcing can mean there's a failure in the high voltage transformer or diode or the magnetron.

But it is usually caused by food particles or grease on the interior or on or behind the waveguide cover (also called a splatter shield).

If it is severe, it can cause the magnetron to fail.

If the diode is bad, it will be shorted and will make the unit run a little louder.

Does it run louder than it used to? Does it have a hum or growling sound that was not present before? That usually indicates a shorted diode or bad magnetron.

Please clarify for us. Happy to help.

SOURCE: Microwave Not Working

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/cap_test.html
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/xformer.html

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

SOURCE: will tin foil in the microwave ruin it completely?

You should always put a spoon in a cup of liquid that you heat in a microwave oven.
The microwave with a potato wrapped in tin foil is like operating the oven with nothing in it! If the microwave was spotlessly clean then your in trouble.
1 put a cup of cold water in the microwave and set for 5 minutes. if the water boils then your lucky if it cold then go and buy a new microwave and stop your childs allowance for a fortnight.
One might ask the question how old is your child and should they be using such a machine unsupervised!

SOURCE: Kitchen Aid (KA) Over stove Micro - vent grill plastic brackets

We have had our microwave for 5 years and have had it replace three times--twice by a technician. It fell off again in October and I still haven't had it fixed because to be honest I'm sick of dealing with this. I'm glad that it never fell on one of our children, however, my floor hasn't been so lucky. The floor in front of the stove is all scratched up from the hard fall of the grill cover. I've never heard of such a thing happening. We bought all kitchenaid appliance because we thought we were getting quality items. However we've had problems with everything we bought. We've had to have our icemaker replaced a couple of times. Our dishwasher now is giving us problems on the top rack by not cleaning our glasses well. And of course the microwave grill cover.

I have a GE spacemaker microwave oven model JVM 1440. A bulb blew and when I went to change both over the stove bulbs stay on all the time. What is the problem and what should I do.

there is some kind of circuit board damage. carefully check for burned foil paths on board; around where the relays are. if so, you may be able to "bridge" the broken foil paths with solder. just unscrew the bulbs in the meantime.

I have a 3-year old Amana microwave installed above my stove. Last night I was baking two potatoes in the microwave. I noticed that the microwave sounded "louder" than normal. After about 13...

No! But it will need to be repaired. Did you wrap the potatoes in tin foil? The reason for the smoke needs to be found and repaired. Smoking means a short or a part shorted, failed, or wires touching another wire that did not blow any fuss. That is not good.
Trained technicians can help the mfg improve their products if they find the problem and report it to the Mfg.
