In your case the most dependable way to use your printer at all is as a generic/text printer. In order to do so:

  1. Plug the printer into the usb port. Cancel the automatic install that vista tries to do.
  2. Go into the control panel choose the printer icon.
  3. Select add printer then choose add local printer
  4. Choose the usb port
  5. Find "Generic" in the manufacturer list
  6. Select Generic/Text Printer and continue with setup.
If you feel comfortable you may want to investigate writing your own inf. file to control the printer. MSDN site has a pretty good starter page with info on creating your own:

I have lost CD 1 of the Lexmark x 85 printer and cant get it to install onto my computer?
These are the Lexmark X85 printer drivers available for download in the Lexmark website:
- Driver for Microsoft Windows 2000 (for Windows 2000 only)
- Driver for Lexmark X84-X85 (for Windows XP only)
- Lexmark X84-X84 Driver for Mac OS X 10.1.x, Mac OS X 10.2.x, and Mac OS X 10.3.x.

it seems that there is no available driver that you can used for windows vista.

if you want, you can try to download the driver in this link http://driverscollection.com/?H=X85&By=Lexmark and hopefully you would be able to install it.

but if still there's no luck, better call lexmark and ask if they have driver for your printer that will work with windows vista.

Do not have installion disk for lexmark x85
You didn't specify the operating system you are using.

However, drivers can be downloaded here, directly from Lexmark:

http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/downloads.cgi?lxkprod=Lexmark+X85

IF you are using Windows Vista (you will see there are no Vista drivers listed), people have reported success using Windows 2000 drivers on Vista.

Be sure to UNPLUG the printer from the PC before installing the software. Only plug it in when the on-screen instructions tell you to do so.
