In my system imformation it tells me, installed physical memory 1gb, total physical memory 767mb, available physical memory 253mb. Why is my total physical memory not 1gb. I am running vista 32bit. Many thanks for your time.

I would assume that the system is borrowing some of the memory for video processing, if you don't have a separate video card with its own on board memory. Or it may be some other PCI device borrowing memory from the system. PS vista is a resource hog, so upgrade the memory if you can

If you have embedded video or cheap chipset on the main-board it reserves some memory for the build in video no matter if you have AGP ot PCIx video card just go to Bios and shrink the used memmory for the video card to 8 MB if you have another card. If you need some help locating the bios setting write back :D

Acer Aspire E500 RAM

This is because your computer is sharing the physical memory with the graphics memory so it will actually subtract the amount of the shared memory from the physical memory in the computer giving you the 780 that you see because the computer reserves a portion of that to use for your graphics.

Memory confusion different readings

It sounds like something isnt working right, what operating system are you using, Vista? I would take out the original 512 and see what it says after, often ram isnt compatible if it is too different in size and speeds. Also, if your motherboard supports dual channel ram and you have the extra 512 chip it wont run in dual channel mode, you would run better with just the 2 chips then the added 512 chip.

Memory installation

Most likely, it is a limitation of your motherboard. Not all motherboards or computers can physically read all types of memory or they may have memory limitations. For instance, I was working on an older Gateway this week. It had 2 memory slots but the maximum amount of memory the computer would recognize is 512 MB. Therefore, if I had put to 1 GB sticks in, provided the computer could use it, the maximum the computer would be able to see or use is 512 MB. In this instance, that is most likely the scenario. The best thing to do is to go to www.crucial.com and run the system scanner. It will tell you how many slots you have, what the maximum per slot capacity and the total capacity of your computer is.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya.
