DVD Drive not being recognized as a DVD drive

That is not unusual.
Several of my CD/DVD drives are listed as CD drives.
They still play and write DVDs.
The problem is cosmetic and not worth spending time on.

Now if you are trying to play a DVD movie you are going to need a CODEC (Coder/Decoder).
Windows XP does not include a CODEC to play DVD movies.
I use Intervideo WinDVD.

I hope this helps.

Cd player

First be sure that you have a DVD drive, and that it's not just a CD ROM. If it's a DVD drive, then you will need decoding software. I use Power DVD and it works fine in conjunction with Windows media player. You can find Power DVD or other decoding software at filehippo.com or at Toshiba's support site.
