Strong Musty odor

My Kenmore 80 series washer has a strong musty mildew odor. I would like to clear that up. Clorox and hot water thru the system doesn't help. Drains are OK.

You will have take it apart, removing the wash tub and all top plastic parts. I just finished taking mine apart do to a mouse that chewed a larg hole in my water tub, and notice tons if old gunk mold and build up. It smells and will not go away unless you scrub it. Sorry to say it is all internal pouring clensers will only wash thru the tubes.

Musty smell

The "MAX" line indicates how much liquid must be in the blue dispenser cup before it DISPENSES from the bottom of the cup.
This is a very, very frustrating mistake that gives owners much grief.
After three months of incorrect type of detergent or incorrect amount of the correct detergent used--musty odor begins to occur.

After more than two years--a significant amount of soap ****/curd has accumulated in the washer. Odor-causing bacteria flourishes on this build-up.
It is imperative to remove this slimy residue. Tide sells a product called
"TIDE WASHING MACHINE CLEANER" which is very effective.

Our towels and clothes have a mildew/musty smell. when I spin the stainless drum inside, i can hear water sloshing around.

Towel mildew odor is transferred from the washer to towels and clothes. The washer must be cleaned first. After cleaning the washer and towels washing habits must change to stop mold smell from returning.

Washing machine mold / mildew is caused by:
#1 cause is overuse of detergents. Detergent companies are notorious for instructing to use too much detergent. Especially with soft water or when using liquid detergent no more than 1 tbsp of any detergent should be used.
#2 most common cause is using fabric softener because it's dispensed in the rinse cycle and will coat the inside of the outer tub with residue that is a food source for mold to grow.
#3 using only cold water for washing is fine but makes preventative maintenance very important. A weekly hot soak will dissolve odor-causing residue from inside your washer.
#4 not using the washer. If the clothes washer isn't used very often maintenance is especially important. If leaving for a vacation it's a good idea to clean your washer. Do a search to "remove washer odor" to read just how big the problem is. There are all natural washer cleaners that will also remove mildew odor from towels and clothing after the washer has been cleaned.

My washing machine has a strong mildew, musty smell when we haven't used it for a day. Cleaned the tap in lower left corner and use the HE soap. Help!!

Hello Friend, Your problem is simple to resolve. This is a common issue. It is possible that the water quality being delivered to the washer could contain higher than normal amounts of micro-organisms causing the growth of mold and mildew. Basically what is happening with your washer, when not in use the washer door remains closed trapping in moisture which is the perfect invironment for mold and mildew to grow. You should run a large empty load with bleach and from now on just leave the washer door partially open when not in use. This should resolve your problem. Happy to help, Tim.

Duet washer has a strong odor when draining

you might be getting "sewer gases" from your drain, but most likely your washer is the cause of the odors.
does it also smell musty when you get your clothes out?
whirlpool makes a product called "affresh" that is specially designed to clean out the residues from a front load washer.
you can find them at sears or lowes and the come in a package of 3 tablets. run a tablet on the clean cycle or on whitest whites or the longest cycle you can choose, use hot water and a second rinse option.
also to prevent this odor in the future make sure you are using only HE type soap and dont use too much. the least amount should do well to clean any clothes.
