you can run chkdsk utility from start - run command

click on start - run
type there chkdsk drive_name /f /r

scandisk is no longer a utility used by windows 2000 and beyond.

Instead, use chkdsk. You run it from a command prompt window. Running it will do a diagnosis. Run "chkdsk /f" to actually fix errors. You may need to reboot to have it done at boot time.
