Hey my xbox 360 is having a problem recognizing disks. When I put a disk in it won't recognize and say open tray. This happens for all my disks. Please help

In the middle of Halo 3 my console restarts, then tells me that it is opening/closing the CD tray.. but.. here's the thing... the cd tray dont do anything.. its happened twice so far. and I dont understand. this is the console they sent me when i had the 3 flashing red lights, is this problem fixable by Microsoft for free as well, if it is not.. it should be.. i am about to trade the damn thing in for a nintendo Wii

Yes I too had the same OPEN TRAY ERROR....... I put it down to trying to play copied discs in it... Anyway, my soloution is this.
open up the xbox, especially if you have no warranty left, Youll need a small star key. Then carefully remove the cd drive unit. You will need to tease the eject button out of the way during removal. Remove the 4 hex screws and then remove the top. Place the unit back in the xbox and put a disc in. Re connect it to the tv and power supply. As the drive trys to read the disc, gently help it so spin and gather speed. I'd suggest using an old film ( NOT A COPY)......This will re-boot the out of sync laser'n'stuff. it worked for me.....Hope this helps :o)

I assume there is a disk inside and the tray is closed? Clean the disk, or like my MW2 disk which is cracked and does the same thing; opening and closing the tray, it will recognize it after a while.
The
lens is out of alignment so doesn't know where the start of the disk
is. This means that you wiil get the "Open tray" message with each disk
you place a disk in the drive.
If you have any warranty on the Xbox 360 then i recommend that you sent it back to Microsoft for adjustment.
If there is no warranty then what you could do is lay the Xbox on its side and repeatedly tap the top of the Xbox when you put a disk in to see if it will read.
If
not then you will have to take the Xbox apart which is a difficult job,
then take the CD/DVD drive out. Take that apart and adjust the lens
unit yourself or take the console to a repair store.
Hey andrew small. The same thing happens to me sometimes, but only when I power up and there is no game in the drive. I also keep the console vertical and that seems to be the problem. Whenever it happens to me, I just tip my console enough so that it is recognized as horizontal and then it pops out just fine. Try having the 360 be on it's side.

Your optical drive has gone bad. Send it in if it's under warranty or look up a replacement online. Just type "xbox 360 optical drive" in your favorite search engine and you'll find plenty of places that sell them.
My friend had the same problem and it was a defective one. You may be lucky and there is a fix but i dont think there is unless you pull it apart and replace the CD drive yourself
