I think I know what you mean because it has happened to me..... When you choose a file on You tube the volume button(bottom left) is often on mute or turned down very low. It needs turning on and up. I hope this answer will help you and is what you are looking for anna

the first thing that you have to check is the computer speakers or if you are using a headets. i suggest to try also spare external speakers or headset to make sure that theres no problem system. in addition,
there is also sound volume in you tube that you can adjust to from low to high. make usre that software youre using is not in mute like real player and son on. i believe that the you tube is latest version of Adobe Flash, you can also try to download a flash plater online.. this may help to resolve your issue.
If you can watch a video no matter how slow it plays then the issue aint with the plugins or the browser, The possible cause is the internet connection speed, if videos play for sometime and shows buffering then your internet connection speed is either slow or used up by other internet related applications that use the available bandwidth if you are running them simultaneously.
