I have an older Compaq Presario V2000. I recently had a new hard drive installed with windows xp professional. The S video port won't work when I connect it to the TV.

The problem is that XPinstallation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on adisk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then,XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS anddisable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is aIDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows hasbeen installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver),then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Of course without seeing it I can't make an exact diagnosis. My first though is that you have a bad sector on the hard drive which keeps Windows from loading because the head can't recover data under the bad sector. Slave this hard drive to a good one and back up the data. Download a copy of hdtune.exe. You can confirm the status of the hard drive with this. If you find bad sectors - replace the drive

when turning on the system go into the BIOS and reset back the seeting s to factory defaults and reboot the system .. If this fails then reseat the Hard drive may have come loose or ?

did you recently add new software ? drivers ? hardware?

What operating program do affect the performance of  machine  so try and remember which program was ok on your machine and install it ,not all  windows will run smoothly in all machines it depends on motherboard architecture .
Install win XP professional  and see if the speed improves .

Try booting into the BIOS Screen and resetting to factory defaults. If that fails suggest swapping the hard drive out and re-install the Operating System - Save your old data and migrate the data off the old drive. You can buy an external drive adapter to connect the harddrive to a USB port to migrate you data.
