My DVD player will play some DVDs but not others. I have no idea how it picks and chooses, but it is frustrating. Someone said they thought the lazer may need replacing. If this is true, how would I go about finding a new one?

Good day! in some reasons dvd player will not play other dvd's.
1. The dvd player you have is not multi region meaning it will not read dvd,s coming from other country. or the dvd's you played is unsupported format of your player.
2. The the spindle motor is malfunctioning, this is the one that rotates the dvd's you played. here in the philippines we tend to replace that one. but most of the time it is sold as a lens assembly. witch includes the spindle motor, lens assembly, and ribbon wire. if that is the case most of the possible parts that would be deffective are already address. try to look in the e bay for parts. i hope i have help you in some way.
