Note that some batteries just don't hack it in digital cameras, even if new. This is especially true for those "super heavy duty" batteries:

OK, so it's definitely not the batteries. A few of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. I turn on the camera. The green light is on. I zoom in for a picture. But the camera screen goes black and the camera lens goes in and off. The batteries are new and I don't why the camera automatically shuts off.
