This may seem a silly question, but I cannot find the answer! I have a Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO Router attached to my desktop PC which I cannot configure in any way.
To explain, I have broadband which is accessed via a ASDL unit, and I used the Ethernet connection. My daughter purchased a laptop (well, I did to regain use of my PC!!). To enable her access to the internet, she purchased a Belkin wireless router. Following the instructions (I know little about them) I attached the router. However, when following the 'Setup' instructions from the installation disc, the process came up with an error saying it could not find an internet connection - checking the internet showed that access was 'live' and she could also connect via her laptop using our network setting. Since then I have disconnected the Belkin and now find that my PC will not connect via the Ethernet cable, only a USB.
Reconnecting the Belkin so my daughter can use the Internet, I have to reconnect the Belkin via the Ethernet connection - doing a search of my PC finds no reference anywhere to the Belkin unit. In addition to this, when I checked the connection via my daughter's laptop, the network I enabled shows that it is not a secure network.
Can you please tell me how to overcome these issues? I know that people cannot access my PC just because the network isn't secure (I did not allow a 'sharing' facility), but I don't like the idea of others' slowing my broadband access by using it for free and slowing it down (the free part I don't really mind, just the slow speed!!). So the questions really are:-
1. Why didn't the installation process detect a broadband access via Ethernet, yet the wireless router did anyway?
2. Why does my PC not connect to my broadband via Ethernet if I now disconnect the wireless router?
and
3. If I leave the router working, how can I make my network setup secure?
Many thanks - great site by the way!!
Derek
Just plug this router in and use the ethernet cable.
now use the (e) internet icon in your programs list. you will get an "cannot connect to internet" page or something like that.
in the TOP search area eg: address bar ...type in the ip address:192.168.2.1
and it should allow you acess to the site.
remember....you need your broadband account info..
YOU NEED TO GET THIS FAR TO SECURE YOUR WI-FI SYSTEM.
1. you need to put the software belkin installation disc into the girls laptop not just the desktop.
2. you need to plug the modem back in
3. on the back of the router press the little button NOT THE RESET BUTTON MAKE SURE IT IS THE LOCK BUTTON it will ask you for a password on the laptop
