HK 3480 sound suddenly cuts out

I recieved this reciver as gift in december. after a few months of not having speakers, i bought some JBL's and everything was sounding great. however, now i'll be listening to music (mostly via a connected laptop) and it will just cut out.

i thought this maybe something odd, so i then just put the reciever on AM radio same thing, so obviously it has nothing to do with the cables. but just to be sure i've checked the cables (reciever -> amplifier & laptop -> reciever) nothing wrong. i'm not hitting mute on the remote, i'm not turning the wrong speakers on or off (i.e. speakers A instead of speakers B), and the power does not go out.

i know it's still under warranty. i just hope i don't have to get it fixed. because i'm just now able to enjoy it... sort of.

thanks.
Ken

The same occurs with my HK3480 as well. I cannot even make it through both sides of a vinyl without the receiver suddenly cutting out. I can switch between phono and FM and the sound temporarily returns but for only a few seconds. This also happens when I switch between phono and tape mon. I hope it is something that I can fix instead of having to send it back

I Have the same problem. Every thing is fine during a few minutes. Just after it suddenly cut off and there is nothing to do... When I change the source (CD --> Tape or something else) I also have the sound during approximatively 1sec. I don't understand. It seems that the automatic protection is doing its job too often...

Yeah, me too. Cuts within seconds. No message about protection, and the behaviour only seem to apply to Speaker A. Tried to switch to Speaker B now and it's been playing for good 10 minutes without indications on cut. Not one of the three tube fuses are blown. Heeelp!

Your fuses are blown by possible crossing speaker wire - and + together. I did this and kept turning it on but I ended up frying the unit. Check your wires and make sure that they are seperated properly. If problem continues then unscrew the shell and replace 1 or all 3 fuses (depending on what was blown) with GMA 8 amp fuses. good luck.

I'm having a similar problem but I can't even find the fuses. Are they the traditional glass tubes or something different? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ray

Try on lower volume and see if that happens. Also try different speakers with higher resistance. Your jbl are probably 4 ohms. Try 8 ohms

I did a system reset by unplugging the receiver from the wall for around an hour. I read this from Harmon Kardon maintenance manual. It worked perfectly for mine.

Hi, I bought a new JBL SCS 140 system with amp HK

Fuses blow when something is shorted. In this case it will be a semi-conductor of some kind. If the device uses IC for the main amplification then you are right to be worried!

The 158 amp is totally unsuitable for the JBL.
This is the specification of the JBL:
  • Recommended Amplifier Power 10 Watt
  • they are also 4 Ohm speakers.
  • 158 is: Output Impedance / Channel
    8 Ohm.

I have hk 3390 reciever

What I did is bought a splitter, plugged it in the headphone jack at the back of the iMac. One side goes to my computer external speakers and one to my receivers aux input, or tape one input. I works, just make sure that the volume on your iMac is not higher than half way, or your sound might be distorted and your external computer speakers are off. Not unless you want them on. Keep your iTunes EQ set to flat, that also will create unwanted distortion. Use you receiver tone controls if needed. Hope this works for you, that's how I did it.

When hooked up get sound but only with volume turned way up and it is very quiet like its working but no power

Is this a new installation or did this problem just appear spontaneously?

Perhaps MUTE is on. Don't troubleshoot this with the power turned up because you may suddenly find a wrong settign and blow up you speakers.

Reciver goes into protect mode as soon as I turn it on.

Remove speaker wires and try again. If it still goes into protect mode, the problem is internal...shorted power transistors or some other fault. Check fuses also.

Why does my harmon kardon reciever keep protecting when i turn it on? i checked the fuses.... nothing wrong...?!?

Check the speaker wires.
Make sure your ohm loads are stable especially if you are using more than one pair of speakers to any output.
Check the starting volume.

JBL EON15-G2--Does the HF Amplifer to the driver have any voltage?

The 2 leads that come off the HF driver are different sizes...you should only be able to hook them up one way. Takes the guess work out of it for ya.

Assuming there is nothing wrong with the speaker, hooking up the 2418H HF driver to it should do the trick. However, I blew my HF driver a few months ago and bought a new one, only to blow it immediately. This was because the motherboard of the JBL EON G2 had actually failed and caused the HF driver to fail. Once I replaced the motherboard and the HF driver (again) everything was back to sounding great. Hope that helps.

Amplifier/receiver switches off systematically after a few second of use

Sounds like a bad output channel is causing it to go into protect mode. Time to see a repair tech.
