The sound has stopped working on my Dell Inspiron 700m. Have checked the Sound and Audio Devices in my Computer but all looks ok!

Hi andrewc489

DELL INSPIRON 700M NOTEBOOK PC AUDIO PROBLEM

You don't say which Operating System you use, so my answer will be presented in general, Windows terms. If yours is a non-Windows Operating System, consider applying the logic and principles involved here to your own Operating System and, if in doubt, please feel free to add a Comment or Clarification to this Question.

Make sure the Audio function in BIOS is 'Enabled' and then save those new BIOS settings.

To enter BIOS Setup, Press 'F2' or 'Del' during the first POST Screen at Start Up.

Also, check the status of the Audio Device and the Audio Driver in Device Manager.

Start > (My) Computer > (System Properties) View System Settings > Device Manager

This will tell you if the Audio/Sound Device is installed and functioning properly and if the Audio/Sound Driver is installed properly. If a red 'x' or a yellow question or exclamation mark appears next to the Audio/Sound Device, then there is probably a settings anomaly, fault, error or conflict with the Audio Device and/or its Driver.

AUDIO DEVICE SETTINGS

For your Audio/Sound Device to function properly, it must be set as the Default Device:

Start > Control Panel > (Hardware and Sound) Sounds Speech and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > (Manage Audio Devices) Audio > click on the Drop Down Menu to the right of "Sound Playback - Default Device" (preferred Default Playback Device) > select "Sigmatel STAC 9750 AC97" > Apply > OK > Restart computer.

AUDIO/SOUND DRIVER PROBLEMS

Re-install the correct Audio/Sound Driver that relates to both the Audio/Sound Device (SIGMATEL STAC 9750 AC97) and your Operating System, then restart the computer. Install the Audio/Sound Driver either from the motherboard's Drivers and Utilities CD or from here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_700M&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

If your Operating System is not the original Windows XP for which this Notebook was designed, then it is highly probable that no Audio/Sound Driver exists for that Operating System.

If you are committed to both this Notebook and an unsupported Operating System but all the other Devices and their Drivers are functioning normally except the Audio Device or you are using XP but the Audio/Sound Problem remains unsolvable (faulty Audio/Sound Chip), then consider buying and installing an external USB Sound Card that is pre-confirmed as being compatible with your Operating System. They are inexpensive. See example:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=xternal+usb+soundcard&x=16&y=23

I hope this helps.

Sigmatel STAC9750/51 audio device driver downloadable

Sigmatel AC97 audio driver 5.1 for the STAC 9750 on Windows Vista, XP and 2000

Description
The Sigmatel AC97 audio driver is for Windows Vista, Windows XP or Windows 2000 (used in lots of Dell, and other brand, pc models). Technically, it is the rather long winded:

Sigmatel C-Major STAC 9750 AC97 WDM Audio Driver.

Whatever way you to label it, the driver package installs version 5.1 of the driver onto your system and can be used as an update to an earlier driver or as part of a new installation.

Windows 7 upgrade, lost sound driver how do i restore 4 free?

The D600 is not listed as Windows 7 compatible, meaning that Dell Support does not have drivers available. See their knowledge base article 10106R8LSJ here: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?journalid=844AC212C831CFD7E040AC0A64E91DF3&docid=360683

That said, provided you have a BIOS upgraded to A15 version - if you don't, you can fetch the upgrade here:
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/bios/D600_A15.EXE
- some people have had success using the downgraded Audio Driver for Stac 9750 Sigmatel version 5.10.0.3952. You can find it here: ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R90698.EXE

Hope this helps.

MY DRIVERS D600

The Dell Latitude D600 only came with one type of sound card. This is the Sigmatel. The drivers you need are for the STAC 9750 AC97. You can find them here: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D600&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Click on the "plus" sign next to Audio and then click on the right hand side where it says, "Download Now."

These are only for Windows 2000/XP. If you upgraded to Vista, Vista should have the drivers built in. If they don't install, more than likely the soundcard is not compatible with Vista.

Best of luck.

Sound driver

SIGMATEL STAC 9750 AC97, v.5.10.0.3943, A14

On the bottom of the laptop there is a service tag number you need to go to www.dell.com and put that in or use the model number. The service tag and model number will get you more info about which sound driver to use. The one listed is the one they normally use in D600.
