The toggle tracing paper won't toggle to transparent. It stays completely white (opaque). It was working fine for the first half of my project now ...it won't go back to 40% or any other percent any suggestions

Thank you for your lengthy and informative question that does help.
My first thoughts:
Did you try and tell the driver what particular type of paper you wanted to print on such as none Xerox recommended.
A thought just occurred if you were wanting to print transparencies then the printer would have to print strong colours at 100% because once you place the image on a OHP the image would look really washed out.
All the Xerox printers I've ever worked on don't have sensors that look at the opaqueness of the media, they do however have transparency sensors because once the edge of the paper has been detected a jam could occur, so lever type sensors are used to actually feel the media.

Can you please provide model number of your TV?

I would start by replacing the thermocouple. It is suppose to keep the gas valve open when in operation. If the mercury in the thermocouple dries out it won't keep the gas valve open and thus the flame goes out. If that does not work then you have a gas valve problem.

On the Epson website it is confirmed that the Epson WorkForce 610 will not recognize transparency media. It is just the way the printer works; if it can see through the media, it doesn't think it's there.
However.....you can tape a sheet of white paper to the non-printable side of the transparency, and it prints just fine. I put two strips of scotch tape on either side, top and bottom. Works great. It's kind of a hassle, but better than not being able to print transparencies at all!

That happens when the monitor goes off but the inverter light failed to switch off. The triac on the inverter board is shorted and must be replaced. When the triac on the inverter board is shorted a continues voltage is supply to the inverter light (or cold cathode) making your monitor to look like a transparent white plastic.

Somewhere, your printer has a sensor (probably a light and a mirror and a detector), to try to distinguish between transparency media and opaque media (such as a sheet of paper).

So, that sensor either has a piece of transparency media stuck inside it, or it is otherwise misdiagnosing what media is between the light-emitter and the light-detector, and thus is claiming that there is transparency media loaded into the paper-tray.

It sounds like you need to take the printer to a qualified technician.

The ALPS MD5500 is capable of both making white undercoat for CMYK colors and white overcoat (more opaque than white undercoat).
MD5500 is produced mainly for the Japanese market only with a Japanese driver.

Considering the age of the set, it is possible that projection tubes are weak. It is also possible that there are failing components in the video circuits, thus causing frequency response problems.

Nice printer.. Hope this will give hints. Considering transparency papers, please try another batch of or a piece of transparency paper. Try to adjust also the graphics preferences (dark to light) aside from transparency paper selection. Have a nice day.
