I have a 96 eclipse. Have had it for 2 wks. Battery lite came on. Test showed battery over charging. Result; regulator bad. Replaced altenator. Same thing, battery lite on, test showed faulty altenator. Replaced alt. Again. Battery lite on again. Test shows faulty regulator AGAIN. Could it be possble to get two bad alts. IN A ROW? My brand new battery can't take much more boiling! Do I trust the tests? If not, how do I track down what is really wrong?? Thanx, desperate deb.

If you have the 2.0L non-turbo engine(420a) the voltage is regulated by the PCM(engine ecu). there is no voltage regulator in the alternator.

humm?!? Now I'm all confused. Napa says regulator in alt is toast. Guess I'll re-read my manual?! Thanks

    OPERATION . .“.
Rotation of the excited field coil generates AC voltage in the stator. This alternating current is then rectified through diodes to produce DC voltage. Refer to the waveform shown in the illustration at left. The average output voltage fluctuates slightly with the generator load condition. When the MFI relay (ASD relay) is on and the control circuit is grounded by the powertrain control module (PCM), current flows to the field coil, initial energization of the field coil. The stator coil starts to generate power after the engine is started. The generator output voltage rises as field current increases and falls as field current decreases. Accordingly, when the battery positive voltage reaches target voltage value, the PCM turns the field current off. When the battery positive voltage is below target value*, the PCM turns the field current on to maintenance generator voltage at a constant level. If the field current is constant, the generator output voltage will increase along with increases in engine speed.
*: The target voltage is programmed in the PCM according to battery temperature.

the 4g63(2.0 turbo) and 4g64(2.4 non-turbo) have a voltage regulator in the alternator.

the pic to go along with the OPERATION material i just posted didn't show. here is the link to the pichttp://www.freepichosting.com/share/3271...

Why do i lose voltage intermittently from the alternator when i step on the brake ?

what engine size?
the PCM runs the show, and its bad. or wires bad to it.
your car has PCM regulator.
no charge battery light.?

1: takes a good battery and battery cables and lugs cleaned.
2: test the altenator, odd how 4 of yours all tested good but you replaced it 4 times, get it tested if good, its good.
3: then check that the charge .battery lamp works. if the lamp works
that means the PCM thinks that charge system is bad.
if the wires from the rear of the alt, to the battery red and Gy wires
are good all the way to PCM then the PCM is bad.
the big wire on rear of ALT , on one car had a bad lug. #6 wire.
he replaced the ALT 6 times. all wasted effort.
inspect the wiring first. that is free, and is simple fix.
and if the ALT casing is not grounded, all bets off.
same with battery minus lug not good, on BOTH ENDS>
one guy had his battery lug moved to frame, (wrong)
and this never worked.

My battery light lit up on dash of my 2008. Mitsh. lancer gls cvt....what does that mean?

Altenator is not charging the system. It could be the altenator, regulator (built into the altenator), A loose wire (bad connection). There is a plug on the altenator that signals this light when a problem occurs. start the car and wiggle it or unplug it and plug it back in, this will tell you if you have a bad connection. To check the altenator you need a voltage tester.

Have you tested the output of the alternator under a load? Have that done because this sure sounds like a charging system issue. Most parts stores like Autozone will test the battery and Alternator for free.

Where do we reset the Volt light on the dash. We replaced the battery and the volt light came on. the alternator is working fine according to AAA when they replaced the battery.

The light only comes on for 3 reasons. 1 the regulator is bad and is not charging the battery. 2 the altenator is bad and is not charging the battery. 3 there is a fault in the ecm that is keeping the light on. if the battery is being kept charged up then the problem is in the ecm. You might be able to fix this by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes. Resets the ecm. There isn't a reset for the light.

Charges ok, battery was replaced, connections cleaned and painted, ran fine for almost three months, then battery went flat again, checked altenator clleaned and greased connections, van ran fine for any...

I would check and clean any wire and connection between the alt and the battery and all grounds. Also check and see if charging voltage is the same at the battery post as it is at the lug on the alt.

have the alternator bench tested for faulty rectifier diode pack
it may be charging the correct voltage but it is AC voltage and not DC voltage
in which case the battery will die quickly
next to check is the voltage regulator
it has to be 4.5-14.8 volts DC and if it in the ECM unit , will require a new ECM to fix

Will not hold charge

Probably a bad battery. Bring it to a parts store for a free check of the charging system and battery. They can tell you what the problem is. Either the battery is bad, or the alternator is not charging.

Cars lights are going bright and dim . changed out battery today and alt tested fine.car ran fine again until tonight then back to losing power

mcdevito75 here, Sounds like the regulator inside the alternator, re test altenator with the headlights off, then on, any lower reading from the altenator with the headlights on, could mean a bad regulator, in the altenator, all 1 unit altenator gets changed.

84 ford not charging

The only thing that comes to mind is electrical connections--battery cable connections (obvious, but worth mentioning) and all wiring to alt. and regulator, nothing loose, corroded? I'd also check the battery by swapping in something else that may fit, or having it tested. Yes, it's new, but I have seen (although rarely) a bad battery that was right off the shelf, wouldn't take a charge.

CHARGING SYSTEM

well for starters your altenator is bad because what it is dolinging is over charging the battery hence why it boiled off the water/acid in the battery. the regulater is intergrated into the altenator. there is not a short because numberone your car would not start and two your battery would explode. i never test a battery or altenator at a store like napa or Oreilly's because they are not mechanics ......they are parts guys. your altenator should charge the battery at no more than 14 volts and the average is 13.5 volts. you need to replace the altenator the reason why you are losing a charge is be cause as the car is running the battery is being discharged because the regulator is defective in the altenator. please rate this thanks
