2002 hd sportster xl1200c is not getting fuel to the carb from the gas tank, is the petcock bad?

  • Anonymous Sep 25, 2010

It's a good possibility. In 1996, H-D began equipping their bikes with vacuum operated petcocks. In my experience, these things have been a major source of problems.

You can take the petcock out of the tank by loosening it until the fuel starts to run out. Use a large funnel and an empty fuel can to catch the fuel. Once drained, take the petcock out of the tank by disconnecting the fuel line going to the carb and the small vacuum line on the backside of the petcock.

On the backside is a plate held on by four small bolts. Take the bolts out and take the plate off the backside. Do this carefully and watch how the spring, needle, and diaphragm come out. Hold the diaphragm up to the light and gently stretch it looking for a hole. You can get a replacement diaphragm at your local dealer.

Personally, I advise replacing the stock petcock with a high quality manually operated petcock such as a Pingel. They're pricey but they work exceptionally well. You just have to get into the habit of turning your fuel on and off manually like the old timers did.

    Good Luck

SOURCE: fuel petcock

If you have a stuck float valve, you could end up with your bike sitting in a puddle of fuel.
For safety's sake, you can turn it off.

04 Harley xL883C Won't start after replacing petcock

Your comment about it running only as long as you're spraying carb cleaner into it tells me that the gas isn't getting to the carb.

Pull the fuel line off at the carb, turn on the petcock, and see if gas flows (use a cup to catch the gas).

If no gas flow, you'll know the problem is somewhere between the ga tank and the carb.

I need to find the fuel filter

On a carb model, a lot of times there is an inline filter in the line from the gas tank to the carb, so follow your gas line down.

BUT, a lot of times, there is no inline filter, and the only thing you have is a filter screen attached to the top of the fuel shutoff (petcock) inside the gas tank.
The only way to access is to drain gas tank and remove petcock,

2005 sportster 1200 carburater not getting fuel

1. remove the full line from the carb, turn on the petcock and watch it flow into a container. Make sure that the petcock is in the correct position and that the tank has at least a half tank of gas. If the petcock does not flow gas, the tank/petcock has a fuel flow issue. If the petcock has a smaller rubber line connected (vacuum controlled) to it, it will need vacuum applied to it before it will flow fuel. Vacuum can be applied using a hand held vacuum tool (purchased at a auto store) or light suction from the mouth will do.

2. If the petcock does flow fuel, remove the inlet to the back of the carb and spray a 1-2 second burst of starter fluid into the carb and attempt to start it. If it attempts to start after spraying it with starter fluid, the carb is plugged and needs to be cleaned.

We were driving down the freeway and my bike just died. It did not sputter or anything just died. We had just filled up, so I know it has gas...

Just because it has gas in the tank does not mean it has gas in the carb. In 1996, Harley went to a vacuum operated petcock and these things give trouble. If the diaphragm in the backside of the petcock gets a hole in it, no fuel flows from the tank to the carb. Take your air filter cover and the air filter off. With the engine off, roll the throttle grip to wide open while watching for a stream of fuel to squirt from the brass thing right inside the mouth of the carb. If you see no fuel, you have no fuel in the float bowl and the petcock is suspect. If you do have fuel, pull a spark plug wire off and put another spark plug in the wire. Ground the plug well against the engine and spin the starter. See if you have a spark. If not, that's your problem and you'll have to troubleshoot the ignition system.

Changed the ignition on 1996 sportster xl1200c now it dies out when i start of in first and in second like its not getting any gas

Well, pull the fuel line loose from the carb, put it in a catch can, and spin the engine. The '96 and later Harley's have a vacuum operated petcock if it is still stock. It gets vacuum from the intake maniold or backside of the carb through a small vacuum line. The hose plugs onto the backside of the petcock. If you're not getting any vacuum or the diaphgram in the petcock is damaged, you won't get any fuel to the carb.

Also, try loosening your fuel cap. Don't take it completely off just good and loose. If the fuel tank vent in the cap is plugged, a vacuum will build up in the fuel tank quickly and stop the flow of fuel.

Are you sure you have your ignition system timed and wired correctly?

Gas in oil tank after bike sat for two weeks.

If you have gasoline in the oil tank after sitting for two weeks, you probably have a bad petcock. In 1996, Harley went to a vacuum operated petcock. They are notorious for leaking fuel. Additionally, you have a problem in your carb. Either the needle and seat are not sealing and leaking fuel into the carb or the accelerator pump diaphragm is bad causing the fuel to seep into the engine.

Once the fuel seeps from the carb into the engine, it will get past the valves, and the rings on the piston and into the crankcase. It will sit there until the engine turns over. At that time, the oil scavenger pump will pump it into the tank.

I suggest you replace your petcock with a high quality manually operated petcock such as a Pingle, have your carb gone through by a competant mechanic, and change your engine and primary lubricants.

Cycle runs for about a minute and a half then cuts out like its getting no gas. Someone told me to drain gas from petcock hose to see if its the fuel filter. Dont know jack about bikes no clue where...

Is the gas on? The petcock is the little thing that hangs under the tank that turns the gas on and off, level is off, vert is on, and one other level is reserve. I had trouble with my Harley, if it didn't have a full tank, it wouldn't start, But once it was running it would vibrate the gas through the system, but gravity wouldn't do it with little or no fuel. Your tank could be rusting up a little, the filter will tell you, keep one on there so it doesn't get into the carbs. 1971 Sportster,, XLCH. Hope this helps.

I have gas dripping from my air cleaner. 2002 883R has been sitting for 1.5 years.

If your bike has been sitting for that long with gasoline in the fuel tank and carb, you can be sure that you need to have the carb disassembled, cleaned, and put back together. Pay particular attention to the accelerator pump diaghragm.

I'd also take the tank off and empty any old gas that was left in there as well. Inspect it for rust on the inside. If everything looks pretty decent, reinstall the tank and fill with fuel. Remove the petcock and clean the strainer on the inside of the tank.
