If you have a stuck float valve, you could end up with your bike sitting in a puddle of fuel.
For safety's sake, you can turn it off.

It's a good possibility. In 1996, H-D began equipping their bikes with vacuum operated petcocks. In my experience, these things have been a major source of problems.
You can take the petcock out of the tank by loosening it until the fuel starts to run out. Use a large funnel and an empty fuel can to catch the fuel. Once drained, take the petcock out of the tank by disconnecting the fuel line going to the carb and the small vacuum line on the backside of the petcock.
On the backside is a plate held on by four small bolts. Take the bolts out and take the plate off the backside. Do this carefully and watch how the spring, needle, and diaphragm come out. Hold the diaphragm up to the light and gently stretch it looking for a hole. You can get a replacement diaphragm at your local dealer.
Personally, I advise replacing the stock petcock with a high quality manually operated petcock such as a Pingel. They're pricey but they work exceptionally well. You just have to get into the habit of turning your fuel on and off manually like the old timers did.
Good Luck
