Have a Dell Computer that was purchased in 2005 with Windows XP Home Edition installed. The computer had an alarm sounding and then just shut down and we cannot get it to come back on. We have tried reinstalling the Operating system but the computer does not recognize any of the drives. At this point we are just wanting to extract the pictures off the Hard Drive and call it a day. What can we do?

Assuming your old hard drive is functional, you can buy a drive enclosure that will allow you to connect your old hard drive to another computer with a USB cable. The 2 most common hard drive interfaces are IDE and SATA. The enclosure has to match the type of drive you have. I recently bought a SATA enclosure on eBay for less than $!5.

Kindly let me know the beep code sequence (the alarm) which you are getting. Just switch on the computer and carefully listen the alarm one long continuous beep or short beep or one long followed by one short. This information is necessary for providing you the solution. Online chat would have been more helpful to restore your pc.

Ok one long beep followed by one short beep symbolises two problems. Don't bother about your HDD thats just fine. Don't try to repair or format your hdd. Simply open the cpu take out the RAM if you have two RAMs inside then take both of them out clean them and put only one inside and try to switch on your pc. In case you have only one RAM then just take it out clean it and change the slot. If after doing this also you get the same beep code error then change the monitor and boot your pc.

DELL DV051 cumputer

To restore the computer you will need to reinstall Windows from scratch with the installation media. The computer may have come with a recovery disc, this can be used to restore the computer to the point at which it was purchased.

Computer has no volume

I'm assuming that you are installing Windows XP onto a computer. If you are getting no sound you are probably missing the sound drivers for your computer. Post the specifications or model number of your computer on this website or you can visit the computer website (example dell.com , hp.com) and download the drivers yourself. They are usually located in the support section of the website, under your computer model number. Make sure it is for Windows XP.

Xbox 360-computer?

To connect the Xbox 360 console to this computer, you must be running Windows XP Service Pack 2, Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, or Windows Vista.
To obtain your setup package or instructions for connecting your Xbox 360, select the version of Windows installed on this computer from the following list.
To determine the version of Windows XP Media Center Edition that you are running, follow these steps:
  1. Start Media Center.
  2. On the Settings menu, click General.
  3. Scroll down, and then click About Media Center.
  4. Click Software Version

The version number of Media Center you are running is displayed.
To determine the version of Windows XP that you are running, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. On the General tab, under System, look for the version of Windows that you are running.

Cannot complete installation of windows xp home edition

Have you added or changed your computer's hardware since you purchased your computer? Your Dell reinstallation disk will probably only work for the original configuration of your machine. If this is the case, dust off your old parts, remove your newer parts, then reinstall your old ones to get your system back to its original configuration. Once there, try the reinstallation again.
If this does not apply to you (or you can't get it to work), you can always purchase the operating system new (from newegg, tigerdirect or similar) and install from a disk that will have all of the drivers you need. OEM versions are cheapest, but you are on your own for support in the event of a problem. I hope this helps.
