Hi dc19800, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?

first off only Asrock drivers work, not from REaltek
and even realtek told you that but ignored that.

sound is not simple , sorry it is not.
the mobo engineer adds not just 1 chip but many including mixer chips and more even phone amps
and front rear switching logic and more, lots.
so now you know why, you failed.
here they are, do not get drivers not from here
or XP is NOW INFECTED as all XP PCs; are now.
    https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/ConRoe94...

all PC made on earth, if MS PnP fails?
get the driver from the actual real OEM
and NOBODY else or bingo your be INFECTED.

the mixer for sound , lets you pick (controlpanel + sound) all inputs and outputs, it is your job to do so. mic or line in.

or buy a new sound card
or buy a new USB sound dongle
    or buy a USB DAC.
    or buy USB speakers.
yes there is not just one cure. and more ask.

Asrock ConRoe945G-DVI 2006 RELIC JUNK MOBO>
OMG 945 chip set junk. whooooo relic max.
only ascrock drivers work from there web site.
matching 2 things, your OS and your exact model PC.
our relic manual states (came new with XP new)

Microsoft® Windows® 2000/XP/XP 64-bit/VistaTM compliant
same place this.
"Microsoft® Windows® VistaTM driver is not ready yet. We will update it to our
website in the future. Please visit our website for Microsoft® Windows® VistaTM
driver and related information"

sound problems well only their drivers work , sound is their custom design and complex
so here it is , from them.
the vista and XP drivers are hear and 64bit too.

https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/ConRoe945G-DVI/#Download

never google and get infected drivers
learn to go to asrock web site only or get infected YOU WILL
xp is virus magnet and is crazy to use, vista worse.

SOURCE: Audio

Asrock board might use standard Intel audio drivers, go to:

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloadindex

and use the Live Update online featere to see if it can identify the necessary drivers, it doesnt matter what brand motherboard you have MSI sually have alot of drivers, you might get lucky
