When I connect my Sony DSC W5 to the computer, it recognizes a device is connected but I no longer get that pop-up that asks me what I want to do with the pictures (for example, "copy to disc, copy to pictures, etc"). My computer was recently wiped clean and windows xp re-installed. I do not remember receiving any kind of disc when I purchased this camera. What can I do?

Two things to try

One
Connect DIRECTLY to the computer NOT via anything else and use the CORRECT lead not one that looks the same

Two

Remove the memory card and try to read that on a suitably eqiped computer.

I am connecting directly tothe computer using the usb cord that came with the camera. I do not have a slot for my stick and have never downloaded any other way or with any other cord. It used to work. Do I need a program on this computer? Is there software I need to download or something?

USB driver software

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

Sony DSC-W5 camera and the LCD screen is blank (white)

Remove the Battery pack from the Camera then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Next, reinsert the Battery pack in the Camera and try to turn it ON. Make sure that the Battery pack is fully charged. If the LCD remains white then the LCD screen needs to be serviced or replaced.

USB Device Not Recognized

try downloading the drivers from sony first http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId=C116935&fes=true&mdl=DSCW5 that is if you have already downloaded the proper usb drivers for your system in which case other usb device are still working also it is possible that the usb port itself has gone bad or is in conflict with another driver assuming your using windows to check this you can start by telling me which version of windows you are using but more than likely the proper camera drivers will solve the issue

No need to install any driver as Vista already has driver for Sony DSC-W5, just hook up camera through USB cable with PC and Windows will recognize and install driver automatically.

Digital camera driver difficulty

2 ideas. 1. Use the eject command in Explorer or on the system tray to eject the USB drive safely. 2. Let me be blunt. I can't count how many machines are not up todate on motherboard drivers, BIOS and the OS itself. It's not your fault, but it falls to the owner to maintain the machine.
