Hi,
They make them a couple of ways...

The most common is for them to have screws on the vertical sides of the cover... remove them and then twist the cover off...
Some have screws up through the cover....

and some covers will just twist off...

Get something to get up there in such away that you are comfortable...and can do some twisting and pulling with out being afraid of falling...

you need a hamton bay remote with a reverse button on it. make sure dip switches are same as other remote.

Hamton Bay Ceiling fan w/ remote.
The remote and the transmitter have 4 keys to set the frequency that each r on. (In case of multiple fans and remotes) The keys above the fan have to match the keys in the remote. It is a simple up or down position for each. They r small. but if they dont match, they r speaking different languages.
