Im having an overheating problem with a 2000 Chevy Caviler...2.2 engine. The coolant is dumping out of the resevoir overflow. I thought it was the thermostat, so I changed it yesterday. The problem is still present. Before going to the hardship of changing the waterpump, Im trying to inquire into other options. There is no water leaking until the car gets up to tempature, and then its only from the overflow. At first I didnt feel pressure in the hoses, but ultimately I did, indicating to me the water was passing thru the thermostat. Is there a way for me to confirm or rule out the water pump? Old school used to have a port and there would be leakage from that inspection port if and when the pump was bad (usually) Thanks

Change the cap for the overflow tank. The seal has gone bad and can no longer hold pressure, therefore it has no where to go but leak from the overflow. New cap $10. This should fix the problem.

Running cold, over flowing through the reservoir now overheating

o2 code is your exhaust and unrelated to the overheating. It is not your head gasket unless the coolant is flowing out off the engine or burning white smoke through the exhaust.

Sounds like you have so much air in the system that it has pushed out the coolant through the overflow and now overheats because air does not cool the engine. You should have a coolant bleeder nut, typically close to the thermostat. Whenever you change or add coolant you have to bleed out the bit of air that gets in.

First there is but one water pump, next did you bleed the air out of the cooling system as directed in the factory manual? If you did then the engine may have a leaking head gasket. Water pump picture below. You may also have a leak in the recovery tank, but that would not cause the overheating unless you let it run dray. This engine is very easy to damage if overheated, think you should let an expert look at this problem.

I have a 2000 chevy venture van with a 3.4 v-6. I recently replaced the radiator, water pump and thermistat and refilled the system, but it is still overheating. I was told to "bleed" the system...

two quick thoughts on this, is the thermostat in correctly? (copper colored end into the
engine block). And second thought is on some vechicles it may be possible to route
the belt incorrectly. Make sure that the overflow tube is correctly attached to the overflow tank as this will cause the fluid to dump on the ground and cause an air pocket
to form in the block. hope this is useful.

Pushing anti-freeze out the resevoir. Changed water pump, thermostat. Temp. gauge does not indicate overheating. Fans seem to be working OK.

Try replacing the radiator cap. A weak cap will allow coolant to leave the radiator and go thru the overflow tube to the reservoir.

Overheating bubbleling in resevoir

bubbling into the overflow may mean a head gasket is gone, it may also mean the radiator or thermostat is blocked. or there is a leak
Clean and flush radiator, check the radiator fins for corrosion
pressure test coolant system
(if this is ok then)
new thermostat
new coolant

Don't overfill the coolant resevoir when adding coolant. There is a cold and hot fill line on the resevoir. Excess coolant will spill out through overflow tube on resevoir.

2000 Lincoln ls overheating

There is a hose on the side of the coolant resevoir that has a straight blade screwdriver fitting in it. Open the fitting and this will bleed the heads on the LS. Without opening this you will never get the air out of the head, trust me.
