Doesn't sound good. If you didn't add antifreeze (depending on climate) in the fall, then water that is in the pump will freeze and pump will need replaced. In any case you have to take the pump off. You might possibly get away with replacing shaft seal and a new gasket on the pump body. let us know

Oil Leak and Water Pump Leak

you can check the water pump leak yourself as there is a small drain hole in the lower part of the bearing housing that lets the water leak out if the seal is failed
you will see a stain at this point running down the front of the motor
as for the oil leak you will see moist dust on the motor or oil spots on the floor where you park the car
best advice is to look for yourself, keep an eye on the reservoir for the radiator or check the water level in the radiator at the cap
if you have to add water then replace the water pump
check the oil on the dipstick regularly and if you have to add less that 1 pint every 5000 miles then the leak is of small worry

Water pump leaks

It will be leaking from either the housing seal or bearing seal - if it's the housing seal it will be leaking from the edge of the pump, if it's the bearing seal it will be leaking from the centre of the shaft or from a small bearing drain hole.

You may be able to get a housing seal, but if it's coming from the bearing, it will need a new pump...

I've got a 08 r6 thats done 3,700 km with a small coolant leak behind the what I think is the water pump housing. Is it a common problem and any ideas on how to fix it? And cost?

Most Yamaha water pumps have a weep hole that drains off any leakage that migrates into the space between the oil seal on the shaft bearing, and the coolant seal at the impellor.
This prevents the fluids contaminating each other.
Sometimes a seal will leak after sitting dormant (winter storage) for months...and they will seal again after a few rides.
Don't be tempted to plug off the weep hole or crankcase contamination can occur.
Not real familiar with your model...but the bigger touring bike (Venture) the seal can be replaced along with case gaskets for around $60 in parts.

I am getting oil out of the pump. Can this be a leak of coolant and can it be fixed.

I am sorry to hear your getting oil, this is not a good thing. If you remove the pump from water and disconnect it from any power source, try removing the lower housing and take a look around the impeller if you can. If the leak is coming from around the edge of the main housing your in luck, it is probably the main seal that can be replaced without too much trouble. If the housing is cracked or leaking near the bearing I am sorry to say it would be best to start looking for a replacement pump.

I turned my starite pump on and it just hummed for about 5 seconds then cut off. What could be wrong?

Your pump motor or impeller is seized. Disassemble the pump housing and check the impeller to see if it spins freely. If not then check for debris, if impeller appears to be free of debris, then check the shaft seal and motor. If the shaft seal is leaking water, then the motor bearing is likely rusted and will need to be replaced. There are 2 bearings, replace them both along with the shaft seal

They can get all the parts. They also provide haynes repair manuals, any special tools (probably not required for this vehicle) and any special disassembly instructions.

I hope this helps.

The pump may leaking from a weep hole at the bottom of the pump. If the shaft seal goes bad, the hole allows the anti-freeze to leak out.

There are several reasons. The oil viscosity can make a difference and if the oil is contaminated with fuel. Wear in the oil pump and all of your bearings starting with the main crankshaft bearings and the connecting rod bearings. The wrong or bad oil filter.
When cold oil flows it plugs leaking bearings and oil gears. When the oil warms, the wear in the bearings (gaps) can't hold back the thin oil and the pressure drops. If the bearings are replaced before the crank and cam are damaged, the pressure will be maintained.
