The vertical circuit gets too hot and burns out the a trace in the circuit board. It is a large, component to the circuitry with a heat sink and it is OBVIOUS to find. (char marks). If you know how to discharge a tube television, then you can bypass the trace with a piece of wire :P Note: I had to fix this problem twice, first time the fix was to just re-solder it, but it broke again a year later. After that the whole trace burned out and I just bypassed it with a piece of wire. It has worked ever since! (4 years and counting)
TURN IT OFF AND DO NOT TRY TO USE---if a thin line left to right in middle of screen it is vertical problem---the set should shut down but even seconds count here--this can burn a mark on all three picture tubes instantly and it is permanent.
Problem if small line left to right in vertical circuit.
