I have a 240V hot tub and when I turn on the Cutler-Hammer GFCB250 GFI Circuit Breaker, 50A, it trips immediately. I spoke with a tech support guy from the hot tub mfr who says that the heater and pump don't even kick in for 6-8 minutes after power is applied so it isn't those as the breaker trips immediately. By the way, the tub worked fine for the last 5 years and even for a couple days this year after I filled it. He thought the problem was electrical so I pulled the cable from the system and turned on the power and sure enough I have 240 V. So it’s not electrical. In fact, I can connect everything except the two leads to the heater and it works just fine. As soon as I connect the two leads to the heater, the breaker trips. I measured the resistance of the heater and it reads about 15 ohms which is what it should read according to the support guy. I'm fairly convinced this is not a problem with the hot tub or with my electrical. What I suspect is the circuit breaker itself. Does it seem reasonable to replace the circuit breaker as a potential cause? I don't really want to spend the $80 to $100 for one of these if it might be something else. Thanks in advance for any assistance you might have. Dave

It is very possible breaker is bad. If you have another 50 amp breaker in the box try swapping them and see if it still trips. GFIC breakers are finicky and they do go bad. I would make sure that the heater is not shorted out before replacing the breaker. It shows 15 ohms which is not what you would normally see which is 9-12 ohms. The reading of 15 ohms you got is high but if the manufacture says that is acceptable then we must assume it is. You also need to test for a short before eliminating the element as a possible cause. Test it with your ohm meter set to the highest setting. Measure between one element terminal and the sheath of the element. Any reading indicates a short to ground indicating the element is bad. If you find it is good then a defective GFCI is really about all it can be.

Can I install a 20a gfi breaker in a 50a 240 gfi spa sub panel?

No. Don't ever do this. You have to install the correct amperage breaker ( magnetic contact ). This will burn your 20a gfi breaker quickly.

220 dryer CH Breaker only trips partially and dryer does not reach full heat. Is breaker problem or dryer?

I would say that the problem is in the dryer, but only tripping partially is not exactly right either. It is easy and relatiuvely less expensive to replace the breaker . $40 .. if you replace the breaker and still get it tripping after a few minutes of opperating the dryer , then it is time to call a service tech for the dryer.
IF the breaker trips immediately when connecting the dryer, then unplug the dryer and try again, to see if there is a wiring problem in the line before the dryer.

How to reset Cutler Hammer 1 pole 15 Amp

Turn handle to off position and then back on. Same as any other breaker. The red test button can be pressed which will trip breaker. If it trips immediately, unplug all devices on circuit and try to reset. Reconnect each device and see which trips breaker. If this goes to outdoor receptacle, check behind cover for moisture.

Gfi Breaker 2 Pole 20 Amp: installed 20 amp dbl pole breaker to hot tub. Keep...

When Working with Household Electricity you want to always keep in mind that the BLACK wire ALWAYS carries DEATH. What I mean by this is that working with a Single Phase Circuit (one that uses 120VAC) the only wire that should be carrying a voltage is the BLACK one, the other 2 wires (typically the White Neutral and Green Ground) should both be electrically connected to Earth Ground (usually by being attached to your water pipe.)

It is also possible that your hot tub may use more than 20 Amps.

20 AMP Cutler Hammer CH GFI wont fit in the breaker box

It will fit, the extra bump out on the back makes it a bit harder to hook the back locking tab before you push it on the bussing. Also, make sure no wires are in the way obstructing the bump out since it hangs out further than the standard breakers. The most common problem is the bump out making it hard to hook the locking tab onto the outer rail. Make sure the breaker is in the off position, then try holding it more flat as you insert it keeping it close to the bussing. This will help keep the extra bump out from obstructing the locking tab from hooking the back rail. Once it's hooked on the back rail you can push it on the bussing like normal.

Swimming pool light on a gfi breaker

It won't take much to trip the GFI. Have you tried to dry the fixture out completely? Use a blow dryer and remove any moisture. Also, remove the light and cap the wires and try it if you can, it might be the wire.

Ground Fault circuit Breaker trips each time a load is applied

The most likely causes in their order of probability are: 1) water somewhere in the circuit causing the hot wire to ground; 2) a legitimate trip caused by a defect in a device plugged into the circuit; and 3) a defective GFCI breaker. In the first case, wait until it has been dry for about a week and see if it trips. In the second case, make sure there is nothing plugged into the circuit and try resetting. In the third case go ahead and put the regular breaker in, then put a GFCI outlet into the first box downstream from the breaker. If installed according to the directions, that outlet should protect all of the outlets downstream.
