You can change the density of the scanned document using an image manipulation program. One I like is XnView. It is free.

How do I reduce scan file size when the resolution is already 200 dpi?

An 8.5 inch wide document scanned at 200 dpi gives you an image that is 1700 pixels wide. This is almost enough to fill a fullHD TV screen at native resolution (1920 pixels wide) which is unnecessary detail. I would use any picture editing programme (many free ones available) to reduce the overall pixel width of your already scanned images by 50 percent. This will automatically reduce the 1MB image to 250k. If you can scan again, use 100 dpi to scan - the result is same; image will be half as wide (and long), and picture file size one quarter of the 200 dpi scan.

How do I scan multiple documents and email them as one attachment

1. Click PDF on the Custom Scan with One-click tab or click PDF in the one-click mode screen to open the PDF dialog box.
* If you wish to convert the text in a document to editable text data, scan the item with the OCR. The precision of OCR is affected by the nature of the scanned original

2. Select the type of document to be scanned.
Important
To scan correctly, select a document type that matches the document to be scanned.

3. Select a file type to save the scanned image.
Select PDF, PDF(Multiple Pages) or PDF(Add Page)
Important
Click Set... to open a dialog box and specify the PDF compression type and other advanced settings for creating PDF files.
4. Place the first original on the scanner and click the [Scan] button at the right bottom corner of the PDF window.

5. When scanning is completed, place the next original and click the [Scan] button.

6. Repeat scanning by clicking the [Scan] button until you finish all the originals.
7. When all the original is finished, click the [Exit] button.

8. When the scan is complete, it automatically starts the application program that displays PDF files and opens the scanned image file in it.

To scan a text document or black and white document, you are recommended to set the Scan Mode to Black and White or Grayscale.
You are recommended to limit the number of pages in any one multiple PDF file to 20 or less if you are scanning a color document with the Image Quality set to 300 dpi and the size to a setting equivalent to Letter size.

When i scanned a 2-page text document using productivity suite's "scan to pdf", it created a 48 MB file which is way larger than it should be, and much too large to send via e-mail. any...

You can try to update your printer driver by downloading the Lexmark X7170 driver from the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/fWPweq. Select your operating system, download and execute the file.
You can also try to decrease the scan resolution. Launch Lexmark All-In-One Center application on your computer. Select Scan mode > See More Scan Settings > lower the scan resolution value to 200 or 150 dpi. Note: This will decrease the scan file size and affect the scan output.
Or you can use a third party scan software to decrease scan file size. You can search the web for free scan softwares.

When I scan to a pdf with the Lexmark X5470, the PDF files are way to huge. How can I have them scan to a normal size?

The file size is dependant on several things, such as, the amount of information on each page, the type of document (all text, image or combination and colors). Try to scan to OCR and then save as PDF.
If you have the full version of Acrobat, not just the reader, try scanning to a word file or RTF then convert to PDF.

Lexmark 7100 scan to .pdf makes file 23 times bigger than usual

> it should be 2-300K

Only if you use Adobe Acrobat (full version) to create the PDF.

All the "text" in the PDF will still be encoded as "scalable text fonts",
rather than as bitmaps.

Anything you "scan" will just be zero and one values,
and the size of the file will be proportional to the amount of "black" (and/or colour) in the scanned image.

Scanning files to large

It's the resolution you are using to scan. Try a lower setting. for documents, 150-200 dpi is fine. That will produce smaller files.

We have a canon MP610 printer scanner combo, I work in a dentist office and am trying to scan a x-ray. When I do it is'nt picking up the detail very well at all. I think I need to adjust the settings but I...

the only way to get a little more detail out of this printer with x-rays is to INCREASE the DPI resolution. there are no other adjustments that are abailable.
The Scan Settings dialog box opens when you click Specify... on the Scan/Import Documents or images screen.
The Scan Settings dialog box allows you to specify advanced settings for scanning.

Document Type
Select the type of document to be scanned. To scan photographs, select either Color Photo or Black and White Photo. To scan text documents, select either Color Document, Black and White Document, or Text(OCR). To scan magazines, select Magazine(Color).
Document Size
Select the size of document to be scanned.
Auto Detect: Detects document size automatically.
Auto Detect(Multiple Documents): Select this when scanning multiple documents at one time.
Select Stitch-assist to scan the left and right halves of a document separately and combine them back into one image.
Reference See the section below for details.
Scanning images Larger than the Platen (Stitch Assist)
When you select Custom, a dialog box in which you can specify the document size opens. Select a Unit, then enter the Width and Height and click OK.

Important When you select Auto Detect the position or size of the image may not be scanned correctly depending on the document. In such a case, specify the document size, such as A4 or Letter according to the document to be scanned, and align a corner of the document with the corner at the arrow of the platen.
When you select Auto Detect(Multiple Documents) allow 3/8 inches (1 cm) or more space between the edges of the platen and the document.
If not, some images may not be scanned at the correct positions and sizes.
You cannot select Auto Detect(Multiple Documents) or Auto Detect when Document Type is Text(OCR).
Scanning Resolution<<<<-------------------------------------------------------------<<<<<<<<<<
Select the resolution at which to scan documents. The following scanning resolution can be specified:
Text(OCR): 300dpi, 400dpi
Others: 75dpi, 100dpi, 150dpi, 200dpi, 300dpi, 400dpi, 600dpi
The higher the resolution (value), the more detail in your image; the lower the resolution (value), the less detail. At high resolution, scanning takes longer and file size becomes larger than usual. See the section below for details on resolution.
this should answer your question , feel free to post here agian if you need more help.

Lexmark X7350 Scan feature

well you are able to scan multiple documents.. but the file size is more.. the way lexmark software writes the pdf file.. the file will be huge for PDF... but not sure if this is a case with any other all in one manufacturer like HP also... but i would assume it would be the same.. so scan the file to MS WORD or any other application that supports multiple pages... so u have it as one file... but if u want only pdf files, then u have to do a little work around like writing the MS WORD Document to pdf format. If the PDF Writer is not installed with your copy of MSWORD then try any free pdf writer software available on the internet.
