I've had the same problem for about the last 6 months. My workaround which was to leave the tv on 24 7 and just turn off the TWC service box. But now the symptoms are vertical dark lines going all the way across screen. My guess is that it will cost more to fix than worth it. I paid @$2000 for it new in 2004. Technology has gotten better so I may just go out and get a Samsumg for considerably less and be way better off. None of Toshiba's products had done well for me. 2 laptops, 3 tvs, etc. have taught me this.

I called repairman and it was a capacitor..tiny little thing about quarter inch square. Cost $157.00 and has a better picture than when it was new..(not joking either). Toshiba HD about 3 years old(projection)...love it now!

White horizontal lines covering picture on Toshiba 51HC85

The set uses a Hyper board inside that processes all signals, it is well known for this issue, board no longer available=reason is quite simple : about a dozen tiny surface mounted filter caps on that board with age dry out, at first it will work after warms up as poor caps regain some capacitance and seem to be ok.

Buy a new set, you can send that board out and have it repaired/rebuilt but the last one I saw which was under extended warranty cost about 200 just for the board rebuild.

In the last 4 years Here on Fixya I have encountered only 2 people who were able with instructions had the skill to remove the board and replace those caps, both were top notch computer repair techs.

Toshiba Model 51h84

The wavy when cold is a issue with a board in the set--Hyper board--the warmup until it begins to work will gradually get longer and longer.

The blue: look at set on a unused video input--if see faint curved blue lines with some blue visable on the screen the blue screen control needs to be adjusted just slightly down until the blue and curved lines are not seen.

The post is a bit confusing. However, I have a Toshiba 42rv530u model where vertical lines appeared. Tech came out and ordered a new panel. It sounds like the same situation with you.

There is a Hyper Module mounted right behind the video inputs board. in most cases you can replace the 10uf surface mounts carefully not to tear the foil. and the set will return to normal. or replace the H/M board. this board is soldered 4 tabs on bottom of main board and then pulls out. good luck list of caps cz52(may not have this cap).. cx261 cx270 cx230 cx178 c514 cx221 cx250 cx241 cx541 cx670

Picture Jumps/flashes for first 5 minutes

There is a module called a hyper board that is vertically mounted near the jack panel. Inside the module are 10mf/25v capacitors they are grtting weak. The module is fully shielded and pluggs into a socket. the module has 4 tabs (2 on each end) that must be unsoldered before it can be unplugged. This repair should be done by a qualified technician. The caps are surface mounts and very small. Unless you have excellent soldering skills and a rock steady hand DO NOT ATTEMPT to repair this problem on your own.
