Hi, i have a 11 SEER (RUUD) Model# UALB-036JAZ and there is a problem with the fan outside on the condenser. It starts to turn and then makes a dead stop like its binding up, but when i take the cover off and kill power, it will spin free by hand. I am not sure what to check. Thank you for any help Rich Daniels

The start/run capacitor for the fan motor must be checked.
Turn off the power to the outside unit and open the control panel.
Follow the brown wire from the fan back to the capacitor.
Look at the capacitor. If it is bukged out on top it is definitely bad.
Capacitors can be bad and not bulged on top.
It will have to be checked with a capacitor tester or replaced with a known good capacitor of the same MFD value.
If the capacitor is good and the fan does not run,the fan motor is bad and must be replaced.

Most model are equipted with a built in thermal overload protection device which causes it ti just stop. The unfortunate part is you can spend more time and money diagnosing the problem the the motor is worth. It is in most cases just easier to replace the motor and have peace of mind. It is a very easy DYI project.

Rheem condenser fan motor

"the guy" added another start capacitor because the motor installed is actually better than spec. Your unit calls for 1/5 HP, 1050 RPM motor. The installed device is 25 rpm faster, and 1/4 HP.

The Rheem/Weather King/Corsaire/RUUD part number is 51-23055-11 (replaces many other Rheem/Corsaire/Weather King/RUUD Part #s including 51-21855-01)! It takes a 3 uf Capacitor rated at 370 volts. This Motor mouts with screws in the SIDE, instead of mounting studs coming out the back!!

Normal price for a generic motor w/ cap will be $125 or so, OEM part will be closer to 200. This is without the fan blade. Make sure you get the correct side mount studs.

This vintage unit is rated at only 10 SEER and is less energy efficient than a modern window air conditioner. Its days are numbered, and you are paying at least double every time it runs. Before you sink much money into this unit, please consider replacing it before it has a heart attack. Replacing it during the off season is cheaper anyway.

RUUD uaka-036jaz not cooling, outside fan does not turn on but air handler (in attic) runs and circulates hot air - how to fix and/or reset?

Check your disconnect or breaker that is located close to the outside unit. Next you need to check the contactor in the outside unit. Set the thermostat to make the air come on then check the contactor. It should be pulled in closing the contacts. If it isn't the problem could be the contactor or thermostat. Next check the voltage on the load side with it pulled in. If that's good then check the capacitor. If it looks swollen, it's bad. You can also use a multimeter with the capacitor check function to do this. Let me know what you find.

Hi, I am having a problem with my home a/c. Ive been having to reset the high press. control reset button on the side of my outside condensor unit lately. Ive noticed that the fan is having difficulty...

If you spin the motor and it starts running, the capcitor is bad. Replace it and all should be well. High pressure is tripping as the fan motor is not starting when the unit comes on.

Capacitor unable to read what size

If it's the condenser fan motor cap then look at the label on the fan motor for the size usally 3/5 mfd.
If its the compressor run cap then check the top of the compressor or the info. plate/sticker on the unit for the size of the cap. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Ruud achiever 10 seer air conditioner

It sounds like your condenser fan motor may be locked up or the capacitor that helps give the condenser fan motor a kick to get it started may be defective. Try turning your system on and using a long screwdriver try to push the fan blade on the condenser fan motor to see if it will run normally if you give it the starting boost it needs. If it does run at full speed and doesn't over heat or start and then slow down then you probably only need to replace a simple 10-12$ capacitor. If it barely turns, makes an odd humming sound or overheats etc. then you will have to replace the condenser fan motor. This is assuming that the outdoor condenser has the 220v supplied and the 24v supplied to the compressor relay, that the compressor relay is engaged and suppling 220v to the condenser fan motor.
