Check to make sure that the FireWire or USB cables are correctly attached and firmly seated in both the drive and computer's FireWire or USB ports. Disconnect them, wait 30 seconds, and reconnect them. If the drive is still not recognized, restart your computer and try again. If they are correctly connected and your drive still does not power on, trying using the optional power sharing cable, described in section 2.3 Connecting the Optional Power Supply of the LaCie Mobile Hard Drive User Manual.
Many times this is due to the drive letter the flash drive wants to use is already taken.. Right click on my computer, click manage and go to disk management to see what drive letters are taken. try plugging into a different pc to see which letter it comes up so you can compare to what is being used on your PC.
The hard drive could have been irreparably damaged. The chattering sound is the heads trying to find the beginning of the data sectors and can't. The drive will shut itself off automatically after a predetermined time period.
Well all good things must end and it sounds like this one has. If it doesn't connect in either computer then something inside has either been bumped loose or it's broken.
Actually, there is nothing you can do with the hard drive. If its shorting out the power supply when its pugged in then it is defective. However, most hard drives carry a 3 year warranty from the manufacture. If the drive is younger then 3 years old, I would call the manufacture and get it repaired or replace. Hope this helps . . .
Ok, this just happened to me, my western digital my book studio external drive was not booting up, i could hear the disk spinning, but it would then cut out and the light on the drive was never turning on. i called Western Digital customer support and found out that the proper way to connect a drive is to plug in the power cable FIRST then the data cable. Also, with the My Book Studio Edition you should never have to press the power button, the drive just turns on when you plug it in. Hope this helps somebody...
