Printer will not stop printing the same page

The printer thinks it needs to keep reprinting the same address over and over on legal sized paper. I have turned the printer off and left it off for several minutes. I have shut down and restarted the computer. None of this helps. The printer will only print if I am feeding it legal sized paper and then it will only print an address. I have selected the cancel all documents link several times and it still keeps printing. Any ideas?

SOURCE: won't recognize legal size paper

I have a Brother MFC-8840Dn (full legal-size flatbed as well as document feeder). I use Windows XP Pro and a USB connection. I'm not sure my fix works with other Brother models or different Windows operating systems, but it's a way to start troubleshooting at least.

I've always been able to print legal-sized pages from word processing or spreadsheet programs and receive legal-sized faxes. But I never could make legal-sized photocopies or PDF scans. The image was always cut off at Letter size. The fix is a Brother Utility set-up setting:

*** Go to Start / All Programs / Brother / MFL-Pro Suite MFC 8840Dn / Scanner Utility. (This link may also be called something like Scanner Settings.)
*** At the "Maximum Scanning Size", select "Legal" instead of "Letter/A4".
*** Click OK and restart your PC for the new setting to take effect.

It's like magic -- I can now scan a full legal-sized PDF, whether on the flatbed or through the ADF. I also tried a compressed TIFF scan and it came out fine.

**** Make sure your software and/or Brother Control Center scanning configurations are set to Legal if that's what you want for the particular image scan. The Brother Utility setting simply enables the option of choosing the larger legal-sized paper, which then allows the full legal-sized image scan, You always have to set your software to make that choice, just as you would to make and print smaller images on Letter, A4, envelopes, etc. (NOTE: I always start scans through software on my PC, like Adobe Acrobat or PaperPort, and the Utility Setting fix is working fine. However, I just tried pressing the SCAN button on the front panel of the MFC itself with a legal-sized document on the flatbed and through the document feeder. I still got Letter-sized image scans. So, there must be another setting somewhere for starting scans directly from the MFC that I'll locate later.)

I was about to buy a different brand of scanner because of the frustration with legal-sized images. It's like having a new scanner now :) I hope this Utility Setting info helps you troubleshoot your legal-sized image problem.

Issue: How do I specify the paper size and type?
Solution: Specifying the Paper Size and Type

Specifying the Paper Size and Type note_white.gif

  • When making copies on LTR-size paper after having continuously copied on paper smaller than LTR-size paper, the copies may be dirty. To prevent copies from being dirty, wait about 1 minute before making copies.
  • The paper in the multi-purpose feeder is fed prior to the paper in the cassette.
  • The settings changed in the Menu do not return automatically to the settings you set previously. Change to the previous settings again if necessary.
  • When making copies of a small size or heavy paper*, etc., the copy speed may be slightly slower than usual.
*The paper type should be selected in the Menu.
  • If you intend to make a copy and print with a thermal transfer printer using the same sheet of paper, make the copy first. Failure to do so may make copies dirty or cause a paper jam.
  • When copying onto transparencies, remove each transparency from the output tray as it is output.

Specifying the Paper Size At the factory, the paper size has already been set to [LTR]. Normally, you can make copies in this setting. When making copies on other sizes of paper, you need to specify the paper size according to the following.

  1. Press <Menu>.

  2. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [COMMON SETTINGS], then press <Set>.
  3. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER SETTINGS], then press <Set>.

  4. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER SIZE], then press <Set>.

  5. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select the appropriate paper size (LTR, LGL, EXECUTIV, A4, B5, ENVELOPE, or FREE SIZE), then press <Set>.
    paper_settings_1_paper_size.gif

black_dot.gif When [ENVELOPE] is selected: white_square.gif Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select the type of envelopes (COM10, MONARCH, DL, or ISO-C5), then press <Set>.
black_dot.gif When [FREE SIZE] is selected: white_square.gif Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [VERTICAL SIZE] or [HORIZONTAL SIZE], then press <Set>. white_square.gif Use the numeric keys, or press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to specify vertical and horizontal sizes of the paper in millimeters (mm).
Available range in [VERTICAL SIZE]: 127 mm to 356 mm (5" to 14")
Available range in [HORIZONTAL SIZE]: 76 mm to 216 mm (3" to 8 1/2") white_square.gif Press <Set>. Repeat the steps above to specify both vertical and horizontal sizes of the paper.

  6. Press <Stop/Reset> to return to the standby display.

Specifying the Paper Type [PLAIN PAPER] is selected as the default paper type. When making copies on paper other than plain paper, you can specify the paper type according to the following. Specifying the paper type can prevent poor copy quality, or the printout not being printed correctly.

  1. Press <Menu>.

  2. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [COMMON SETTINGS], then press <Set>.

  3. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER SETTINGS], then press <Set>.

  4. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER TYPE], then press <Set>.

  5. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select the appropriate paper type, then press <Set>.
    paper_settings_2_paper_type.gif

You can select from the following paper types: - Plain paper (17 lb to 24 lb (64 g/m2 to 90 g/m2 )): [PLAIN PAPER] - Heavy paper (25 lb to 34 lb (91 g/m2 to 128 g/m2 )): [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1 - Transparency: [TRANSPARENCY] - Label*2 : [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1 - Envelope: [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1*1 If print fixing is not sufficient when printed with [HEAVY PAPER] selected, select [HEAVY PAPER H].
*2 A label that can be loaded in the cassette is a standard type (label standard card) only.

  6. Press <Stop/Reset> to return to the standby display.

My HP 4100N printer often automatically selects to print from tray 1 (the manual feed), when I want to print from tray 2 (the automatic feed). How do I set the default tray?

HP Laser Jet 4100 HP Not pulling paper from Tray 2
Action: The 4100 will look at tray 1 first then tray 2 If tray 1 is empty it will pull from tray 2 if the papersize matches the job otherwise back to tray 1 and ask for the paper. Your machine likely thinks the paper in tray 2 is not the size you want. For instance you have LETTER in tray2 But the machine thinks it is legal. The LJ 4100 detects the paper size in tray 2 automatically. If you print a configuration page: MENU them INFORMATION then ITEM then CONFIGURATION PAGE then SELECT. The page will print and show what size paper the machine thinks is in Tray 2 if it says LEGAL and you have LETTER you need to Check The Paper Backstop in TRAY 2. The back stop sets the length of the paper if it is not at Letter (8 1/2 x 11) the machine will not detect LETTER. Even if it just a little bit off or between positions.
If it is set at LETTER then you may have bad switches in the machine that are operated by the tray. Or the arms on the tray that operate the switches are not moving properly. You will find the arms on the rt, side of the tray and feel them change position when you move the backstop.

Printer wont print. It keeps saying PC Load Legal. The printer has paper in it.

Well the printer is telling you to load "Legal Size paper, which is 8.5" X 14" paper.

More than likely, the application you are using is telling the printer to print the page on legal sized paper.

If you want the document to print on "Letter sized paper (8.5" X 11") then in the application, go to the File drop down and select "Page Setup". From within page setup's window, change the paper size to letter and then re-print the job.

Brother MFC6800 not printing

To answer more effectively - how is the printer connected to the iMac? Is it a USB connection, a printer cable, is the MFC 6800 connected to a print server, an AirPor, etc? A second question I have is if you are trying any kind of tricky printing such as manualduplex printing.

Also, a shot in the dark...Is the Auto Reduction set to on or off? To check:
1. Press MENU/SET, 2 (Fax), 1 (Setup Receive), then 4 (Auto Reduction).

2. Press the up or down navigation key (keys located above and below the
MENU/SET key) until the display shows "Reduction: ON?".

3. Press MENU/SET.

4. Press STOP/EXIT.

Another item to keep in mind:
You can use three sizes of paper for printing your faxes and
copies---letter, legal and A4. When you change the size of paper you ha
ve loaded in the Brother machine, you need to change the setting for the paper size so your Brother machine can fit the incoming
fax on the page. To set the Paper Size:

1. Press MENU/SET, 1 (General Setup), then 1 (Paper Size).

2. Press the up or down navigation key to select LETTER, LEGAL, or A4.

3. Press MENU/SET.

4. Press STOP/EXIT.
