The printer thinks it needs to keep reprinting the same address over and over on legal sized paper. I have turned the printer off and left it off for several minutes. I have shut down and restarted the computer. None of this helps. The printer will only print if I am feeding it legal sized paper and then it will only print an address. I have selected the cancel all documents link several times and it still keeps printing. Any ideas?

SOURCE: won't recognize legal size paper
I have a Brother MFC-8840Dn (full legal-size flatbed as well as document feeder). I use Windows XP Pro and a USB connection. I'm not sure my fix works with other Brother models or different Windows operating systems, but it's a way to start troubleshooting at least.
I've always been able to print legal-sized pages from word processing or spreadsheet programs and receive legal-sized faxes. But I never could make legal-sized photocopies or PDF scans. The image was always cut off at Letter size. The fix is a Brother Utility set-up setting:
*** Go to Start / All Programs / Brother / MFL-Pro Suite MFC 8840Dn / Scanner Utility. (This link may also be called something like Scanner Settings.)
*** At the "Maximum Scanning Size", select "Legal" instead of "Letter/A4".
*** Click OK and restart your PC for the new setting to take effect.
It's like magic -- I can now scan a full legal-sized PDF, whether on the flatbed or through the ADF. I also tried a compressed TIFF scan and it came out fine.
**** Make sure your software and/or Brother Control Center scanning configurations are set to Legal if that's what you want for the particular image scan. The Brother Utility setting simply enables the option of choosing the larger legal-sized paper, which then allows the full legal-sized image scan, You always have to set your software to make that choice, just as you would to make and print smaller images on Letter, A4, envelopes, etc. (NOTE: I always start scans through software on my PC, like Adobe Acrobat or PaperPort, and the Utility Setting fix is working fine. However, I just tried pressing the SCAN button on the front panel of the MFC itself with a legal-sized document on the flatbed and through the document feeder. I still got Letter-sized image scans. So, there must be another setting somewhere for starting scans directly from the MFC that I'll locate later.)
I was about to buy a different brand of scanner because of the frustration with legal-sized images. It's like having a new scanner now :) I hope this Utility Setting info helps you troubleshoot your legal-sized image problem.

Issue: How do I specify the paper size and type?
Solution: Specifying the Paper Size and Type
Specifying the Paper Size and Type
*The paper type should be selected in the Menu.
Specifying the Paper Size
At the factory, the paper size has already been set to [LTR]. Normally, you can make copies in this setting. When making copies on other sizes of paper, you need to specify the paper size according to the following.
When [ENVELOPE] is selected:
Press <> or <> to select the type of envelopes (COM10, MONARCH, DL, or ISO-C5), then press <Set>.
When [FREE SIZE] is selected:
Press <> or <> to select [VERTICAL SIZE] or [HORIZONTAL SIZE], then press <Set>.
Use the numeric keys, or press <> or <> to specify vertical and horizontal sizes of the paper in millimeters (mm).
Available range in [VERTICAL SIZE]: 127 mm to 356 mm (5" to 14")
Available range in [HORIZONTAL SIZE]: 76 mm to 216 mm (3" to 8 1/2")
Press <Set>. Repeat the steps above to specify both vertical and horizontal sizes of the paper.
Specifying the Paper Type
[PLAIN PAPER] is selected as the default paper type. When making copies on paper other than plain paper, you can specify the paper type according to the following. Specifying the paper type can prevent poor copy quality, or the printout not being printed correctly.
You can select from the following paper types:
-
Plain paper (17 lb to 24 lb (64 g/m2 to 90 g/m2 )): [PLAIN PAPER]
-
Heavy paper (25 lb to 34 lb (91 g/m2 to 128 g/m2 )): [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1
-
Transparency: [TRANSPARENCY]
-
Label*2 : [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1
-
Envelope: [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1*1 If print fixing is not sufficient when printed with [HEAVY PAPER] selected, select [HEAVY PAPER H].
*2 A label that can be loaded in the cassette is a standard type (label standard card) only.
