My dryer will not start. It just makes a humming noise when I try to get it to start.

If it makes a humming noise, as if it's trying to start, you most likely have a defective motor.

if it makes a humming noise for a short peiod then stops and after a while it does it again the drum maybe stuck and making the motror go off on overload try turning the drum by hand and see how it spins

If the humming noise is coming from the motor, (take the back panel off) remove the power plug and try to turn the motor by hand. If it seems free, look for a 'starter' capacitor on the motor which may be bad.

a hum with a burning smell means the motor winding has failed.
you can try this: open the door and hold in the door switch, have another person hold the start button. You manually roate the drum by grabbing a fin and moveit while the unit is humming.IF the dryer starts, you need a motor.

You have a motor that has a thermal overload built into it. This is for the dryer's protection. My best guess is to replace the motor. But before you do all that, make sure the wiring is good from the receptacle to the controls in the back of the dryer. It could not have a good connection thus causing this noise.

if its a humming than a click,,wont start for a few mintues,,than the hum again ,,your motor is shot,,,replace,,onthejob

If it just hums the motor is probably on it's way out. If it makes a growling noise, it's the motor.
