SOURCE: GE Spacemaker Oven shuts off after 3 min

TO RYNEAU:

The cooling fan is critical! If the magnetron overheats too much or too often, it can fail, and that adds to the repair cost.

If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

There should also be a very helpful "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel. It's very helpful when troubleshooting.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

TO MARTYB704 & GUEST:

I think you have a different problem than Ryaneau.

This is usually due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.

If your magnetron was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or maybe the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got

pinched.

It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.

GE had a campaign (but not a recall, mind you!) covering several models.

Details are in their bulletin at http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf

Even if your model is not on the list, the same problem can occur, requiring a kit. I just think the difference is that GE has stopped paying

for the repairs.

The parts kit (that GE used to pay for) is part # WB27X10489 and is shown here: http://207.234.249.73/mwd/wb27x10489_ge_mag_stir_kit.jpg

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is

at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

SOURCE: microwave shuts down after cooking three or four minutes

Your magnetron is overheating and tripping the thermostat, which interrupts power until it cools.

Since it's less than one year old, it should be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

SOURCE: During cooking, the microwave will work for about

sounds like the cooling fan has came adrift or stopped working , this will cause the magnatron ( the microwave generator ) to overheat tripping the over temperature stat ,so fix the cooling , but be sooooooooooooo carefull in there , microwaves + really high voltages , not really a job for a non electrician/microwave tech

RE: Samsung microwave SMH7187STG mfg'd 5/08. I heated cup of tea 2 min. Then I closed micro's door & micro emitted a continuous electrical buzzing sound.I opened door & buzzing stopped.

The cook relay on your control board is shorted, and the unit is cooking whenever you close the door.

When the magnetron overheats, its thermostat opens, shutting power down until the unit cools to a safe level, then power is restored.

I regularly repair these with my $54.95 service, which includes insured return shipping.

Details are here, or for full information and instructions, please e-mail me here at [email protected] and remind me of your full model number and symptoms.

Not enough venting. Imagine putting your hair dryer on full and putting it that cabinet. Would your venting keep it cool? Your microwave oven uses about the same current

I have a LG Microwave that shuts itself off before its done cooking any comments? The lights and clock are still on so its still getting power

The microwave oven has a temperature sensitive thermal fuse, if the magnetron overheats "heats food" it shuts that sector down until it cools down, "up to 30 minutes before it will reset" sometimes the thermal fuse becomes defective opening up because it has become intermittent over time. This is a tricky problem to diagnose and should be checked by somebody who is familiar with these types of devices.

I have Emerson Microwave #mw8999sv which has the Express Cook option- cooking 1 - 6 minutes. How do I cook for 1 minute 30 seconds, etc.? Thank you.

The owner's manual is here. On page 10 we find:

Cook indicators will light and “PL 10” will light in the
display.
2. Press the POWER button different times to set the

3. Press number keys to set the desired cooking time.
OPERATION(CONTINUED)
4. Press the START/+30SEC. button to start cooking;
the Microwave and one of the Cook indicators will

five times when cooking is completed.

If you unplug the ac power cord , wait between 30 and 60 seconds and then replug the cord in, push the reset button and then select the time ot cook desired followed by the start button, it seems to work fine for a while (days) and then for some unknown reason it stops after one minute of operation and returns to all eights on the display. A real mystery as to why this is happening and what is really wromg with the unit.

Magic chef over the oven microwave shuts off.

Is not normal for a microwave to shutdown after 4 minutes of operation.
From the info you are providing, It looks like the magnetron might be overheating causing the thermal fuse to shut it down until it cools down. There may also be a loose connection in one of the switches or a cold solder joint in the low voltage power supply.
I would suggest to check and make sure that the fans are functional, If always did; it could be that there isn't much air circulation where the appliance was installed.
