First make sure that the fax button has been pushed and is llit...

The 2820 should have a handset. In order to use manual transmission (when you get to hear all the beeps and whistles) you will need to load the document then pick up the handset. then dial the number, when you hear the recieving fax tone then hit the start button.

The 2820 should also have a hook hold button pressing this will allow you to hear the dial tone and the numbers you dial along with the receiving fax tone. If you dont hear anything when you press this button then you may want to use the volume buttons to increase the volume.

Also remember that if you have not picked up the handset or pressed he hook/hold button the unit will use automatic mode, which is to say that all you will do is load the document, dial the number, and then press the start button.

HOW TO SEND A FAX

You can send a fax in a variety of ways. Using the control panel, you can send a black and white or color fax. You can also send a fax manually from an attached phone. This allows you to speak with the recipient before sending the fax.
To send a basic fax (single- or multiple-page black-and-white fax) by using the control panel. These features allow you to control the pace of your dialing. They are also useful when you want to use a calling card to charge the call and you have to respond to tone prompts while dialing. NOTE: If you need printed confirmation that your faxes were successfully sent, enable fax confirmation before sending any faxes. TIP: You can also send a fax manually from a phone or by using monitor dialing.
1. Load your originals. NOTE: If you are sending a multiple-page fax, you must load the originals in the document feeder tray. You cannot fax a multiple-page document from the glass. 2. Enter the fax number by using the keypad, press Speed Dial or a one-touch speed dial button to select a speed dial, or press Redial/Pause to redial the last number dialed.TIP: To add a pause in the fax number you are entering, press Redial/Pause, or press the Symbols (*) button repeatedly, until a dash (-) appears on the display. 3. Press START FAX Black or START FAX Color. • If the device detects an original loaded in the automatic document feeder, it sends the document to the number you entered. • If the device does not detect an original loaded in the automatic document feeder, the Fax from glass? prompt appears. Make sure your original is loaded print-side down on the glass, and then select Yes.TIP: If the recipient reports issues with the quality of the fax you sent, you can try changing the resolution or contrast of your fax.

Send a fax manually from a phone You can send a fax from a telephone on the same phone line if you prefer to use the keypad on your phone, instead of the keypad on the control panel of the device. You can do this by plugging in a phone into the 2-EXT port on the back of the device. When you send a fax manually, you can hear the dial tones, telephone prompts, or other sounds through the handset on your telephone. This makes it easy for you to use a calling card to send your fax. Depending on how the recipient has their fax machine set up, the recipient might answer the phone, or the fax machine might take the call. If a person answers the phone, you can speak with the recipient before sending the fax. If a fax machine answers the call, you can send the fax directly to the fax machine when you hear the fax tones from the receiving fax machine.
1. Load your originals. NOTE: This feature is not supported if you load your originals on the glass. You must load your originals in the document feeder tray. 2. Dial the number by using the keypad on the phone that is connected to the device. NOTE: Do not use the keypad on the control panel of the device when manually sending a fax. You must use the keypad on your phone to dial the recipient's number. 3. If the recipient answers the telephone, you can engage in a conversation before sending your fax. NOTE: If a fax machine answers the call, you will hear fax tones from the receiving fax machine. Proceed to the next step to transmit the fax. 4. When you are ready to send the fax, press START FAX Black or START FAX Color. NOTE: If prompted, select Send Fax, and then press START FAX Black or START FAX Color again. If you were speaking with the recipient before sending the fax, inform the recipient that they should press Start on their fax machine after they hear fax tones.
The telephone line is silent while the fax is transmitting. At this point, you can hang up the telephone. If you want to continue speaking with the recipient, remain on the line until the fax transmission is complete.

Send a fax using monitor dialing Monitor dialing allows you to dial a number from the control panel as you would dial a regular telephone. When you send a fax using monitor dialing, you can hear the dial tones, telephone prompts, or other sounds through the speakers on the device. This enables you to respond to prompts while dialing, as well as control the pace of your dialing. TIP: If you do not enter your calling card PIN fast enough, the device might start sending fax tones too soon and cause your PIN not to be recognized by the calling card service. If this is the case, you can create a speed dial entry to store the PIN for your calling card. NOTE: Make sure the volume is turned on, or you will not hear a dial tone. To send a fax using monitor dialing from the control panel
1. Load your originals. NOTE: If you are sending a multiple-page fax, you must load the originals print-side up in the document feeder tray. You cannot fax a multiple-page document from the glass. 2. Press START FAX Black or START FAX Color. • If the device detects an original loaded in the automatic document feeder, you will hear a dial tone. • If the device does not detect an original loaded in the automatic document feeder, the Fax from glass? prompt appears. Make sure that your original is loaded on the glass, and then select Yes. 3. When you hear the dial tone, enter the number by using the keypad on the control panel. 4. Follow any prompts that might occur. TIP: If you are using a calling card to send a fax and you have your calling card PIN stored as a speed dial, when prompted to enter your PIN, press Speed Dial or a one-touch speed dial button to select the speed dial entry where you have your PIN stored. Your fax is sent when the receiving fax machine answers.

HOW TO SEND FAX INTERNATIONALLY

Sending a fax to another county is easy - almost as easy as sending a fax to someone in your own country. The only difference is the phone number that you'll dial.
When sending a fax from one U.S. city to another, you dial a 1, then the area code, then the seven-digit phone number. When sending a fax from the U.S. to another country, you usually dial 011, then the country code, then a city code (which is like an area code), then the phone number. (The phone number isn't necessarily seven digits.) Check out the web site www.HowToCall.info, which will give you the specific country and city codes for the place that you're trying to send a fax to.
Other than figuring out the phone number, faxing internationally is identical to faxing domestically. Fax machines in other countries use the same protocols as ones in the United States, so you should have no difficulty communicating with a foreign fax machine. Older fax machines and noisy overseas phone lines may cause the transmission to take a bit longer than you're used to, but it should get there.
The first time you send a fax to another country, it might be a good idea to listen in as the fax machine dials. On some fax machines, you can press the "Dial" button to hear the dial tone, and dial the number manually. Listen for the ring and fax tone, then press the Start button to send the fax. You might want to do this the first time you send a fax overseas, just to make sure it's working as expected.

1) did you dial correctly?
2) are you in an office or in your own home?

a) if you are in an office, you may have to dial a 9 or someother number to dial out before you can type in your original fax number.

b) if you are in your home, then its a number of things: Fax machine not connected with phone lines properly is one big supect. Check your phone cables to make sure that the fax machine is properly connected.

When I try to send a fax I must dial 5 then number, do I have to put the area code if it's the same? and it says dialing then no answer. Does this mean it is actually trying to send the fax? (military)

It never hurts to use the area code in some places it is necessary.
No answer either means you are dialing a number that isn't a fax or the fax you are dialing is not set up to auto answer.

Try a fax you know is working.

Status 50 on a fax estudio 45

the number is busy. Try pressing the monitor button and listening for a dial tone. No dial tone means your phone line is not working. If you have dial tone, dial the number you wish to fax and listen to see if it picks up. If you get a busy signal, or hear someone answer, that is why it's not working. If you hear the fax tones, press start and send your document. This is a way to fax that allows you to hear the whole process.

Brother Intellifax 4100 unable to send fax but can receive

Is the fax sensing the paper you put in to send out? Check the little black levers that poke into the document area. They should move freely when you touch them gently with a finger, and return quickly when you take your finger off. If it can't sense the paper it won't try to send a fax. If, when the paper is inserted, the display changes from whatever it said to anything else, the paper is being sensed.
Let's try dialing manually. Just left of the 1 key is a button labeled "Hook." Pressing that will take the telephone line "off-hook," like picking up the receiver of a phone. You should hear a dial tone -- if not, try adjusting the speaker volume with the buttons just right of the numbers. Once you get a dial tone, dial a number, whether it's another fax, or your own cell phone. As far as the phone company is concerned, your fax is just a phone, calling another phone. If you can make a call, and the phone at the other end rings, we're closing in on the problem. If you can dial another fax machine manually, you can still turn this into a fax call, assuming there's paper ready to fax. After the distant fax answers, touch the Start button, and your fax should take over. If you can't dial manually, try unplugging your fax from the phone line, and replacing it with a regular phone. Can you make calls with it? If not, the fax is no longer a suspect - you have a phone line problem.
Are you at a business where you need to dial 9 to get an outside line? It's easy to forget that detail when you're using a fax, but it has to dial out just like any other phone on the system.
If you can't get a dial tone at all with the fax, but it works with the phone alone, the main board in the fax is probably bad. If you can dial manually, using the Hook switch, but the same number doesn't work when you dial xxx-xxxx-Start, that sounds like a main board problem, too.

Won't send faxes

did you put the originals page(s) in the machine FIRST to fax, then enter the number then press start?
If you enter the phone number 1st BEFORE putting your originals in the feeder, the machine thinks you want to make a copy.
The FAX Mode is the setting for incoming faxes.
Try that and let me know if it works.
There should also be a button called "Hook" or "speaker" or something that you hit and you will hear the dial tone.
Once you hear the dial tone, you can dial the number, (make sure the pages you want to fax is in the feeder.
Once you hear the fax high pitch noise, hit the start button.
Hope this helps.
Let me know if it does and also remember to leave a feedback and rating if I have helped you.
Thanks and good luck.
