IMAGE SETUP AND IMAGE DISTORTION PROBLEMS After

IMAGE SETUP AND IMAGE DISTORTION PROBLEMS After the monitor's menu started appearing from nowhere, it reconfigured itself, altering the image setup in the process: Horizontal, Vertical heights and sizes re-adjusting themselves, racing to and fro like the monitor's circuitry has gone loco. Every so often it pauses, but resumes re-adjusting until the result becomes so visually grotesque. Brightness and Contrast have joined the fray, and relents only after achieving the brightest image at 100. The Image Distortion Options have left the screen with an awful shape and caved-in borders.

How do I adjust the image width on this wide screen? Everything appears distorted and wider than it is. I would like a narrower image.

This is one of the problems with the wide aspect screen. Most images seem to fit best on the older monitors.
You can go into the video properties and choose one the the display types that best display your image. Unfortunately, by taking a normal (to us) image that looked just fine on an older monitor and displaying it on a newer, wide-aspect monitor, you're gonna distort the image or crop it in a way you didn't expect.
My advice is to experiment with the display until you find something you can live with.

Troubleshooting Flat Panel Monitor issues.

Screen is blank and power indicator is off

The monitor is possibly not receiving power. Perform the following steps to fix the problem:
  1. Ensure that the electrical outlet and the monitor are both switched on.
  2. Check that the power cord is firmly plugged into the electrical outlet and the power supply unit.
  3. If the power cord has a removable fuse, replace it.
  4. Try another power cord.
  5. Try another electrical outlet.
  6. Check the power connection at the back of the panel.
Screen is blank and power indicator is steady green

Brightness and Contrast may be too low. Adjust the brightness and contrast using the On-screen display controls (OSD) by selecting the button
Screen is blank and power indicator is steady amber

The monitor is in the Power Management Standby state. The power management feature is invoked when the computer recognizes that you have not used your mouse or keyboard for a user-definable period. Perform the following steps to bring monitor out of the power management state:
  1. Press any key on the keyboard or move the mouse to restore operation.
  2. Check the Power Management software on your computer.
  3. flatpnlmont12.jpgPress the (OK) key to switch between analog and digital mode. If the panel is the wrong mode for the signal being provided, the monitor appears to go into sleep mode.
Screen is blank and power indicator is flashing green
Display mode of the computer is outside the range of the monitor. The display mode the monitor uses is controlled by your computer. Therefore, you should refer to your computer's documentation for details on how to change display modes.

The image size, position and shape may change when the display mode changes. This is normal and the image can be readjusted using the IMAGE SETUP and the monitor controls.

Note: Unlike CRT monitors, which requires a high refresh rate to minimize flicker, TFT technology is inherently flicker-free. If possible, configure your computer for 1600 x 1200 addressability at 60Hz vertical refresh rate.

Use the following table as a guideline and reconfigure your computer to use a supported display mode. The highest resolution (for example, 1600 x 1200) produces the optimal output, but limitations of your monitor may prohibit this setting. Adjust the addressability mode until an image appears.

CHECK SIGNAL CABLE" message is shown and power indicator is steady amber.

The monitor is not receiving a video signal. Perform the following steps to fix the problem:
  1. Check that the signal cable is firmly connected to your computer
  2. Check that no pins are bent in the signal cable connector.
There are noises in the video signal. The IMAGE SETUP function is used to adjust the level of noise in the video signal which causes horizontal lines or areas where the image appears to be unstable and jitters or shimmers. This can be done automatically or manually.
Note: It is not applicable to digital input.
Use the image setup fix the problem:
  1. flatpnlmont6.jpgSelect (Image Setup) menu in the OSD.

  2. Select Manual to adjust CLOCK/PHASE settings.
Image appears to be discolored

The color setting may be incorrect. Perform the following steps to adjust the color settings:
  1. flatpnlmont8.jpgSelect (Image Properties) from the OSD menu.
  2. flatpnlmont9.jpgSelect (Color Properties) to adjust the color mode you find most comfortable or fine tune the colors using the Custom menu.
A few dots are missing, discolored, or inappropriately lighted

A small number missing, discolored, or lighted dots may be present on the screen, which is an intrinsic characteristic of the TFT LCD technology and is not an LCD defect.

Screen stretched out horizontally and distorting picture. None of the settings buttons appear to solve this. I can shift the image vertically or horizontally; but not squeeze it horizontally.

There are adjustments in the size of the items on a screen under the screen properties, settings. If you right click on the desktop screen and then properties you can get there. There is at least one size which causes a distortion of images being displayed. This may be your problem.

Screen jumps back to prior screen

If you mean to say that the computer-generated displayed image on your screen changes, it's a function of the computer, not the monitor. If you mean to say that some monitor-generated displayed image is appearing (such as a setup/configuration menu or a splash screen), please tell us more so we can diagnose further.

Screen appears squeezed from left and right sides

Sounds like the video card settings are over-riding the monitor settings. Go to display settings in control panel, and try the one that says "recommended". The other thing I have found out is sometimes the monitors start doing strange things before giving out completely.

Screen image appears fuzzy, jumpy and broken up into lines.

gardenman13, I would certainly complain to HP about their w22 monitor!! Find out if the units warranty is still valid and can be swapped-out for a REFURBISHED unit. Your w22 shouldn't be hazy, distorted, or flicker for any reason. My best guess is that it (w22) has problems inside with it's "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps" and electronic ballast circuit called an INVERTER circuit, which could also cause the main "switch-mode-power-supply" to go a little NUTS upon STARTUP!! FYI you are dealing with a technology similar to the curlie-Q CFL screw-in light bulbs. Their ballast's are called CONVERTERs (ac to ac) and are cheaper. Your lanps are thinner and straight, hung on rear of your LCD panel. I hope this was informative. Please rate this on fixya. 12fixlouie

Monitor distortion

Hey edwardaaron,

If you are encountering any kind of visible distortion on your computer monitor, there are a couple of things that I would suggest.

First, if you have a cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor, you may want to try manually degaussing the monitor. Whenever a CRT monitor is in use, it slowly builds up a magnetic charge that can interfere with its operation. Degaussing then, is the process by which CRT devices rid themselves of this excess magnetic charge. This is normally done whenever a monitor is first turned on, but many monitors will also have either a button on the front control panel you can press or an option in the main menu to perform a manual degauss.

In many cases, the degauss option will be marked with a horseshoe or magnet-shaped picture. Once you've selected this function, you may notice a metallic-sounding "twang" noise, followed by one or two "clicking" noises as the image on the screen is reset. Keep in mind that images on the screen may appear to vibrate and color may distort for a few seconds after you do so, but this is a normal part of the degaussing process. The screen should return to normal after a few seconds.

Second, interference can also be caused by placing your computer speakers too close to the monitor. Many speakers will produce a magnetic field of their own, which only adds to the magnetic field generated by your monitor. In this case, repositioning your computer speakers should help minimize the problem.

If degaussing fails (or you don't have a CRT monitor), you may wish to then test the cable connections to your computer. In some instances, simply replacing your monitor cable will resolve these types of problems.

You may also be encountering a problem where your monitor is simply set on the incorrect refresh rate. If the refresh rate is not correctly set, a monitor may display a "wavy" image or appear as if lines are periodically scrolling across the screen. Without knowing the exact make and model of your monitor however, I would not be able to provide any suggestions on how to change this setting - you would need to contact the manufacturer or refer to your owner's manual for specific instructions.

The worst case scenario would be if you are encountering an actual hardware failure. Both the video card and monitor can cause images to be distorted if they are not functioning properly, and even power supplies have been known to cause other components to sporadically malfunction. If you are unsure how to perform a hardware diagnostic, I would strongly suggest speaking with your local computer repair technician or a Geek Squad® agent at your local Best Buy™ store for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
